Anniversary year - 40 years of Insektarium!

"Butterflies - misunderstood diversity"
With the event focus "Butterflies - underestimated diversity" from January to March 2019, the Insectarium at the Museum für Naturkunde will open up a close-up view of butterflies - with detailed specimens, a silk moth farm, butterfly taxidermy, a butterfly exhibition and a butterfly exhibition.butterflies, a butterfly preparation, guided tours through the butterfly collection in the museum's stacks as well as live and even free-flying tropical butterflies with changing diversity.

Public Tuesday tour: Hidden treasures - A tour of the entomology stacks

Admission: 5 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to the age of 18 free of charge
Most of the objects housed in the Museum für Naturkunde are insects. This guided tour through the entomological stacks will introduce you to some of our collection treasures and explain their special features.

Birds - our feathered friends
Whether in the forest, in the field or in the city - birds have become an integral part of our lives. We will try to identify different bird species and listen to their songs. You will make a bird feeder to take home with you.
Admission is free for children and young people under the age of 18.
There are material costs of 1 euro per participant. (max. 25 participants)

On the trail of Schnappi and Co. - A journey through time in the Petrified Forest of Chemnitz
Location: Museum of Natural History Chemnitz, museum ticket office
Admission: free of charge
Together we will go on a journey to the Chemnitz Petrified Forest and take a look at the exhibition. How is a fossil actually formed, when did it once live and how did we discover it in the centre of Chemnitz? We will find answers to these questions together. At the end, you will create your own personalised wooden fossil picture.

Free-flying butterflies in the insectarium
Location: Insectarium of the Museum of Natural History.
Admission: Free admission for children and young people under the age of 18.
Butterflies have always inspired the human imagination. They are omnipresent as a popular figure. The transformation of unsightly, voracious caterpillars into winged, nectar-drinking plays of colour is considered one of the most amazing wonders of nature. The wealth of shapes and colours of butterflies is hard to beat. As a special offer, some of them can be observed flying freely at close range in the insectarium during the winter holidays.
