Special exhibition: Proboscidea
Location: TIETZ, Museum of Natural History, 1st floor
Admission: Visiting the special exhibition on proboscideans is free of charge. A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent and special exhibition.
The freely accessible area between the Museum of Natural History and the Neue Sächsische Galerie currently offers an insight into the evolution of proboscideans. Scientific volunteer Christopher Herrmann found an unexpected number of proboscidean fossils while working in the museum's collection magazine. This gave rise to the idea of thematising the evolution of elephants using objects from our collection. You can get up close and personal with elephants, mammoths and the like in the display cases.

Chad - through the Tibesti Mountains to the Ounianga Lakes - A lecture by Jens and Heidi Hering

In May 2025, Jens Hering and his wife Heidi travelled to Chad, the heart of Africa, for the fifth time since 2021. Their ornithological tours have repeatedly focussed on the Ounianga region, the largest lake district in the Sahara. Following in the footsteps of the famous African explorer Gustav Nachtigal, they also visited the Tibesti Mountains in the north-west of the country, where no ornithologists have conducted research for over half a century. The programme also included an investigation of one of the most remote places on earth. On one day, the team ventured down and up into the 1,000 metre deep volcanic crater of Trou au Natron to study the birdlife in this "hellhole" for the first time ever. A little later, a more than surprising discovery was made in a mountain valley characterised by volcanic rock. The discovery of countless thousands of years old breeding caves in so-called ignimbrite made the results on the currently occurring breeding birds pale in comparison. Fascinated by the discovery, new trips were made to the Tibesti in the following years with the aim of further elucidating the mysterious holes. Finally, unique photos from southern Chad will round off the lecture, where the famous GDR animal photographer Helmut Drechsler had a fatal accident on the Chari River in February 1960. One of the aims here was to find the crash site and the grave.

Spring festival with seed and plant exchange fair

Nature's hibernation is over and not only buds are blossoming into new life - people are bustling about on the streets and in the gardens. The Museum of Natural History invites all spring enthusiasts to a spring festival with a seed and plant exchange on 28 March from 1 to 5 pm.
Young and old can let off steam creatively with spring and Easter crafts: Easter nests, blooming Easter eggs and themed glitter tattoos are on the programme. Little detectives will get their money's worth on the "Who hides what?" treasure hunt through the permanent exhibition. The ASR of the City of Chemnitz also invites visitors to experiment. At its Bio station, the focus is on waste utilisation and the bio-cycle. Beekeeper Peter Wagner from Murschnitzer Hof offers honey and interesting facts about bees. With its mobile book lending centre, the city library will inspire visitors to create their own gardening projects. Stachelnasen Zwickauer Land e. V. will also be on hand to answer any questions about hedgehogs. If you would like to take a hedgehog home with you, you can make little hedgehogs at the stand.
Home gardeners, small gardeners and flower pot gardeners are invited to bring seeds and plants to exchange and thus preserve the natural green diversity. At 3 p.m., Claudia Huwe-Klug will give a talk entitled "Hedgehogs in distress - how can we help?" on the specifics of dealing with hedgehogs and what we should all bear in mind.
