Welcome to the 3rd Fairy Tale Day in the city library. Our reading mentors will read fairy tales from all over the world in the children's world at 11 am and 3 pm and the Chemnitz amateur theatre group "Lachfalten" will perform the fairy tale "Die Regentrude" at 4 pm, suitable for children aged 7 and over.
Fairy tales can be found in all cultures. Listening to the storyteller also means sharing time and values. With this fairy tale day, we want to create the opportunity for everyone to enter into a relaxed dialogue through storytelling.

Léon Poliakov (1910 St. Petersburg - 1997 Orsay) was an important French historian who mainly researched the topics of racism, anti-Semitism, Jewish history and the history of the Holocaust. As early as 1951, together with François Mauriac, he published a comprehensive study - the first ever to be published in Europe - on the hatred of Jews and the Nazis' policy of extermination, as well as its historical and intellectual roots (German title: "Saat des Hasses"). Hannah Arendt wrote: "Anyone who wants to know 'what really happened' and 'how it really happened' ... cannot afford to overlook this study and would perhaps do best to start with it." But while Poljakov's "History of Anti-Semitism" has been translated into German in eight volumes since the 1970s, it took 70 years before his "epoch-making book on the persecution and murder of the European Jews ... a masterpiece of historiography" (René Schlott, FAZ) under the title "From Hatred to Genocide".

Three ladies are sitting in front of the TV in a retirement home watching Germany's Next Top Model, an aunt is trying to reach her niece in Cambodia and three friends meet again after a long time. One is pregnant, the other is pursuing a career, the third is not. In three parts, Julia Wolf paints a poetic panorama of three generations of women who are living their lives in very different ways. The war lies like a shadow over all of them, swept under the carpet of petty-bourgeois West German households.
Reading as part of the "Landpartie" series organised by the Saxon Literature Council.

JelGi course "Everyone learns the guitar"

Educational professionals, teachers and senior carers can learn in just a few hours how to easily accompany children's and folk songs, popular songs and songs without any prior knowledge. The strings of the guitar are tuned to C major so that only one fingering needs to be learnt with the left hand. There are many fingerings for the right hand. There are also tips for JelGi music-making with guitars, boomwhackers and Orff instruments with children from the age of 2, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The non-profit association "JelGi - Jeder lernt Gitarre" organises the JelGi courses on a voluntary basis. A donation towards expenses is requested on site.

The Schmitz', that's us: Mum, Dad, the twins and me. Until the morning Schmitz' cat threw up in the kitchen, we were a normal family. Now we're famous. Everyone in town knows us. Even the pizza delivery man who visits Mum every day. Because Mum doesn't cook any more, not even with anger. Mum is on strike. Frauke Angel, actress and award-winning author from Dresden, and Chemnitz-based illustrator Stephanie Brittnacher tell the humorous story of mum Schmitz's strike from the son's perspective in "Geht ab wie Schmitz' Katze".

BibLab-C: 3D printing - a short introduction

3D printing - a constructive manufacturing process - is a buzzword on everyone's lips and is a topic that not only inspires industry, but also the centre of our society.
3D printers are more than simple CNC machines. Behind them lies an incredibly large cosmos: whether developments, experiments, repair culture, the open source scene or the maker movement.
The workshop is designed to give anyone interested a brief insight into this world. In the two hours, an overview of current technologies will be given, which will be illustrated using many interesting examples and an active 3D printer. In addition to providing information about the current possibilities, the event will also provide an incentive to take a closer look at the topic.

At the end of the project, it's time to listen again: The Chemnitz Library Lab celebrates its own technical possibilities and offers insights into the art of audio editing and finding ideas for your own podcast with two workshops. We have invited two well-known Chemnitz greats for workshops:
11 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Audio editing with Audacity 1 + 2
Audio editing doesn't need expensive programmes. A short radio play or a new audio track for a self-shot video can be easily created and pimped with the free multi-track editor Audacity. Unfortunately, Audacity is not optimised by default and requires some fine-tuning. However, once these initial hurdles have been overcome, you can achieve great results quickly and easily.
The first part provides help with the installation and setup of Audacity. In the second part, a small sample project will be developed.

3.30 to 6 p.m.: From the idea to your own podcast
With a podcast, you have the opportunity to get your own thoughts and ideas out into the world. But how do I find my niche? How are individual episodes conceptualised? Which platforms are suitable for publishing? How do I market my podcast? You will deal with these and other questions in the workshop and can hold your own podcast concept in your hands at the end.

"Shakespeare on the way to Chemnitz 2025"

Harald Linke will present his translation of William Shakespeare's sonnets in an entertaining way. These love poems are actually set between two men. Shakespeare followed a fashion of his time in which the bourgeois poet chose a patron from the high nobility to enhance his own image. The "sonnet" was the typical form of exchange. Shakespeare handled this in a particularly sophisticated way. By treating his patron as a woman, he opened up the possibility of criticising the high-ranking aristocrat. It is in this context that the sonnets are viewed so superficially in the social mirror of Shakespeare's time and, in this translation by Harald Linke, take on a new dimension in their frequently described "mysteriousness".
Harald Linke, born in 1939, a teacher of Russian and English, worked as headmaster of the "Dr Theodor Neubauer" extended secondary school in Chemnitz and managed the education system in one of Chemnitz's districts. After retiring, he became intensively involved with Shakespeare's sonnets and published several German translations of them; here is the last revised version.

Luisa's workplace is deep underground. She works in a visitor mine in the Schlema Valley in the Ore Mountains, and although she spends many a day without a single ray of sunshine, she couldn't imagine a nicer job. As far back as she can remember, her ancestors worked in the mines. The family history is steeped in hope and the realisation that you have to savour every minute together, because some of them never returned from the mountain. When Luisa decides to investigate her great-uncle, who disappeared decades ago, some things come to the surface that have remained hidden for far too long. It is the longing for light that finally restores peace to the family.

A childhood that smells of the coal dust of steam locomotives, of hot, greasy clitters and the ink of mosaic notebooks - Stefan Tschök spent such a childhood in the Saxon province of the 1960s. It was a childhood full of light, but surrounded by the shadow of the wall that the young GDR had drawn around itself. The Chemnitz author describes this state of limbo in his new novel "Uferlinien", published by edition claus.
Stefan Tschök will read a few passages at the premiere of the book and talk to publisher Christian Wobst about the process of creating the book.

Grit Lemke, Children of Hoy: Freedom, Happiness and Terror

Author Grit Lemke, whose Grimme Prize-nominated film Gundermann Revier took a deep look into the life of her hometown of Hoyerswerda, is now reworking the biography of her complex generation. In a documentary novel, she skilfully interweaves the voices of the children of Hoy to create a captivating oral history.
In the sixties and seventies, they came with their parents to Hoyerswerda, a model GDR town: rammed out of the heath, assembled from building elements. In the mornings, the parents roll off in shift buses and the children grow up in a large collective. The narrator becomes part of the cultural and art scene around Gerhard Gundermann, the Springsteen of the East. A kind of proletarian bohemia develops: at night in the basement club, in the morning on the shift bus. But reunification was followed by mass redundancies, and latent racism against contract workers living in the city and a rapidly growing right-wing movement led to riots. The cultural scene remains inactive, but even for them, nothing will ever be the same again...

Headphone cinema in the city library
When the days get shorter and the weather gets worse, we show films to combat the "November blues".
Headphones on, sound on, film on ... we have a special kind of cinema.
In our GamingArena in the TIETZ, up to 30 people can take a seat on the grandstand and comfortable seating. Screenings are also held in the district libraries in the Yorck Centre (12 seats) and Vita Centre (20 seats).
We use the film portal "Filmfriend", an online service provided by Chemnitz City Library. The films on offer focus on German classics, documentaries, children's series and international arthouse cinema. We show a selection of book adaptations, family and social films as well as films about the environment, nature and travelling.
