With twenty-two storeys, the Langer Lulatsch is the tallest building far and wide and as famous as the Pope in Rome. Among those who live here are Kläuschen, the twin caretakers Ratte and Ferkel, and also the poltergeist, whose real name is Frau Schnupf and who has a pug with bad breath. A perfectly normal high-rise, then. But one day, lightning strikes, the lift goes haywire, and an even crazier story unfolds.

Exclusively for all 10- to 16-year-olds, hundreds of titles from the latest children’s and young adult literature are available to read during the summer holidays: thrilling thrillers, mystery and fantasy novels, and cutting-edge stories about love and life.
Signing up for the Book Summer is free and straightforward, with no need for parental consent. Anyone who reads three books during the summer holidays will receive an invitation to the Book Summer closing party after the holidays, as well as a certificate.

Just like a goody bag, every primary school child can choose a rucksack containing a surprise item and borrow it for four weeks.
This offer is exclusively for primary school children aged 6 to 10.
A library card is required to borrow the items; this is free for children until their 18th birthday.
Available at all branches of Chemnitz City Library – one rucksack per child and only whilst stocks last!
Don’t need a rucksack? Then bring it back to the library and send it off on its next reading adventure! A little reward awaits you.

In the Footsteps of the Frogs – Part 1

This exciting holiday activity is all about the fascinating lives of frogs! We’ll visit the vivarium and immerse ourselves in the world of these special amphibians. There, you’ll learn interesting facts about the frogs’ way of life, their diet and their life cycle – from tadpole to fully-grown frog. With a bit of luck, we might even get to watch them being fed. A special highlight: we’ll collect an audio device from the vivarium that has recorded the sounds of the frogs there overnight.

Lecture by Prof. Dr Thomas Bürger: A Jewish German on probation?
Stefan Heym’s life stories in Cambridge and Chemnitz

As the eyewitnesses of the 20th century pass away, their written legacies are becoming increasingly important. In 1993, Stefan Heym (1913–2011) unexpectedly bequeathed his manuscripts, correspondence and video recordings to the University Library in Cambridge. Did he distrust his fellow Germans? Was he – the Jewish exile, the American soldier, the outspoken writer in the GDR, who died in Israel in 2001 – a ‘Jewish German on probation’?
This illustrated lecture presents some of the impressive documents from Cambridge and Chemnitz and makes a case for digital access.
Prof. Dr Thomas Bürger was Director-General of the SLUB until 2018. In 2023, he spent three months in Cambridge as a guest of Trinity College, including three weeks at the Stefan Heym Archive at the Cambridge University Library.
An event marking the Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony, in cooperation with the International Stefan Heym Society, the Saxon State Agency for Political Education and the Saxon Library Society.
