Events at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in October 2019

Tuesday, 1 October, 6.45 to 8.15 pm

Into the rubbish bin - and then?

Location: TIETZ, Room 4.49

Admission: free

We throw things in the bin every day: hoover bags, kitchen waste, paper, glass, packaging and much more. But what actually happens to the different types of waste? Where is which waste taken and how is it disposed of? What is recovered and how is it recycled? In the city of Chemnitz, the ASR is the city's own waste disposal company, providing a daily service for around 125,000 households and public spaces. On this evening, you will receive answers to all your questions about waste disposal in Chemnitz from the ASR's waste counselling service.

This event is part of our "Living Consciously" event series. More information is available at the adult education centre

Tuesday, 10 October, 7 to 8.30 pm

A look behind the facades of the district court

Location: TIETZ, event hall

Admission: free

The independent administration of justice is a valuable asset of democracy. Courts and judges serve to implement the law. In Germany, there are different types of courts and different instances, i.e. hierarchical levels of jurisdiction. This course will provide a brief overview of the various jurisdictions and their structure and jurisdiction. The focus will be on criminal law, as this is the area that attracts the most interest from the press and the public.

The course is intended to prepare students for attending a criminal trial as a spectator. Therefore, the most important processes from the preliminary investigation to the start of the main trial will be outlined first. Then the work of the professional judges and lay assessors is explained until the judgement is reached. The date for attending a criminal trial will be arranged with the participants on the day of the course.

This event is a co-operation between the Chemnitz District Court and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Tuesday, 22 October, 5 to 6.30 pm

"Our children are our greatest treasure!" - looking for mediators

Location: TIETZ, see VHS room advert

Admission: free

We are often confronted in conversations or via the media with deficiencies in the upbringing of our children, inadequacies in school education and a growing propensity for violence among children. Disputes are a part of children's lives, but they must not lead to violence and insults. This is precisely why the organisation Seniorpartner in School e.V. carries out important work in primary schools throughout Germany: by using senior citizens (55+ generation) who work on a voluntary basis, children are empowered to resolve and end arguments with each other in a non-violent and respectful manner. In the lecture and the subsequent discussion, you will learn about the aims and methods of the organisation and the mediators (arbitrators) active in Chemnitz and gain an insight into this work. You may even become interested in joining the organisation.

This event is a co-operation between Seniorpartner in School Sachsen e. V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Monday, 28 October, 6.45 to 9 p.m.

Where is Ukraine heading?

Venue: TIETZ, course room 4.07

Admission: free

Since the Maidan protests in 2013, Ukraine has not been at peace. The more than five-year war with Russia in the east of the country has claimed well over 10,000 lives and yet is hardly ever discussed in public. The country is heavily indebted and dependent on loans from the EU and the IMF. Politically, Ukraine is caught between Europe and Russia. With the change of presidency following the elections in May 2019, hopes are growing for impetus to resolve the most pressing issues, but there are also concerns about new tensions and internal political conflicts. At the same time, a parliamentary election is due in autumn 2019 at the latest, which could cause majorities to crumble as well as shake up the party landscape. This evening will provide you with background information on the not-so-distant country of Ukraine and its current political situation.

This event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Saxon State Centre for Political Education as part of the "Kontrovers vor Ort" series.

Wednesday, 30 October, 6.45 to 8.15 pm

Buddha, you and me

Venue: TIETZ, Room 4.07

Admission: 7.60 euros

Buddha statues have long since found their way into many living rooms in Germany. Meditation as a tool for dealing with everyday challenges is all the rage. But what exactly is behind the Buddhist philosophy? And what does it contribute to happiness in life? We want to take a closer look at Buddha's philosophy with the help of a lecture - in a way that provides inspiration for our everyday lives beyond the evening
