Resilience - thriving despite adverse circumstances

Why do some people who grow up under difficult to severe living conditions nevertheless develop into competent personalities? Why can one person endure what destroys another? This phenomenon is known as resilience.
In psychology, this refers to the "psychological resilience" that makes it possible to remain healthy or recover well despite pronounced stress and risk factors.
The lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon of resilience and shows that each of us has the ability to develop positively despite adverse circumstances.

Introduction to family research

Studying one's own family history is becoming increasingly popular. This course introduces the working methods of a family researcher. The following questions take centre stage: Where do you get information about your own ancestors? How can the research results be meaningfully organised? What tools are available to the family researcher for researching and analysing information? The course familiarises you with the most important sources of family research, deals with genealogical forms of presentation and offers assistance in reading old documents.

"Love in times of capitalism - Our society in ten theses", book presentation

How do we love in times of capitalism? Why do we long for security? What will the future bring us? Which God do we still want to believe in? Why do we think greed is cool? What does freedom mean to us? What are the consequences of digitalisation, automation and robotisation?
In his new non-fiction book, renowned author Robert Misik reflects on our present. Using ten exemplary terms that aptly outline the zeitgeist and constitution of our society, he explores the question of which paradigms we are subjecting our lives to. Robert Misik is a regular contributor to the daily newspaper taz and the Austrian magazines profil and Falter. He is an author of non-fiction books, including the bestseller "Genial dagegen". On this evening, he will present his book, which was published in spring 2018, and would like to enter into dialogue with the audience.

Viewing and managing digital photos

The more digital photos accumulate on data carriers, the more necessary it becomes to organise them skilfully. With functions integrated in Windows and additional programmes, digital photos can be viewed and managed simply and easily.
Course content: Windows slideshow, creating photo albums, creating photo albums and slideshows with freeware programs, organising photo collections better with categories and keywords

Presenting digital photos

In this course, you will create a video from various image files, which will then show your holiday photos as a presentation video, for example. A freeware programme is used for this.
Course content: Importing JPG or BMP files, determining the length of the image display, creating professional fades and transitions, inserting text, creating text effects, saving the slideshow as a video

It doesn't always have to be Photoshop for digital image editing. There are various powerful programmes on the freeware market. Get to know the most common editing steps with the free and open image editing programme GIMP.

Get older and stay fit! With an enjoyable, wholesome diet

Nutrition is an important topic throughout our lives. But especially as we get older, a healthy, balanced diet can do a lot for our health. In this course, you can expect interesting "tidbits" of information on how nutrient requirements change, how this affects the nutrient density of food and how you can find the right food in the wide range of products on offer in supermarkets. You will learn details about the sense and nonsense of food supplements. There will also be little treats to stimulate all your senses.

We live in secret. The past and present of Sinti and Roma in Saxony

In Germany, members of the Sinti and Roma minority live in a wide variety of circumstances. Some Sinti and Roma have lived here for more than 600 years, others have fled to us since the war in the former Yugoslavia. This is why everyday life here has many faces: German Sinti encounter institutional racism and prejudice at school and in public offices, while the immigrant Roma from the Balkans are confronted with the fear of deportation. The event will highlight the forms and structures of this multi-layered and specific racism against Sinti and Roma. It will also show the continuity of persecution during National Socialism up to the present day and provide insights into the everyday lives of Roma in Saxony today. The speakers are members of the RomaRespekt project and the Romano Sumnal e. V. association.
This event is a co-operation between Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Whisky seminar: Distilleries: Edradour
The smallest of Scotland's conventional distilleries
Location: TIETZ, course room 5.22
Situated in the middle of the Highlands and heavily frequented by tourist buses due to its cleverly marketed superlative, it advertises itself as the smallest Scottish distillery with only three permanent employees. It is now owned by the independent bottler Signatory and offers two different product lines: Edradour and the smoky Ballechin. There are also a number of interesting finishes, we taste a cross-section of the production, and two cask strengths are also planned.

"Don't lose heart!" Reading of an exchange of prison letters from Sachsenburg concentration camp
Venue: TIETZ, event hall

The Eastern European historian Georg Sacke was imprisoned in Sachsenburg concentration camp for over seven months. During this time, he kept in touch with his wife Rosemarie through an intensive exchange of letters. In sometimes very intimate lines, the letters tell us how his conception of the concentration camp, but also his wishes and hopes, changed over the course of his imprisonment. In this way, they give us new access to the history of the Sachsenburg concentration camp and the people imprisoned there - beyond elusive figures and one-dimensional perpetrator documents. At the event, pupils from Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium will read selected passages from the correspondence.
The reading marks the end of an online letter project. In this project, the correspondence will be published at www.briefe.gedenkstaette-sachsenburg.de until November 2018, exactly 83 years later to the day.
