The Maghreb - History, culture and society in North Africa

Location: TIETZ, VHS room display
Admission: 6.40 euros

Life in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria is not only characterised by African and oriental influences, but also by the balance between nomadic life in the desert and westernised life in the cities. The influence of France cannot be denied, even in times of independence. This event is intended to cover and present the history, culture and social life of the North African countries.

Tuesday, 2 July, 7 to 9.15 p.m.
Café Philo: Hass

Venue: Kulturhaus Arthur, Hohe Straße 33
Admission: free of charge

The fact is: hate posts on the internet are becoming more and more unrestrained, verbal hatred at demonstrations is getting louder, "dissing" someone appears to be the new ideal of self-assertion, TV series show ruthless and violent clan bosses as the main characters, aggression in everyday life, in road traffic and at schools erupts at the slightest opportunity and there is sometimes a political climate that uses hatred as a means of power. It seems as if ideals of community and solidarity as a value and means of social cohesion are in decline.

At Café Philo, we ask and discuss: How does hatred as an extreme consequence of demarcation, aversion, aggression and intolerance differ from other negative affects and forms of relationships? How does hatred arise? What is the difference between social hatred (for example towards politicians) and private hatred? What is its social function? And how can it be countered?

Saturday, 6 July, 11 a.m. to 4.45 p.m.
