Volunteering forum: Fundamentals of accounting in the association

Admission: free
Regardless of who is entrusted with the accounting work, it is the task of the association board to establish suitable structures for good accounting. The course examines the functions, principles and instruments of accounting, such as income and expenditure accounting, bookkeeping and financial reporting. It is aimed in particular at association board members and treasurers.

Café Philo: Hate

Café Philo is a free discussion event dedicated to one overarching topic each semester. In four moderated individual discussions, the respective topic is fanned out and experts are consulted if necessary. The aim is not to obtain knowledge that can be tested, but rather the discussion itself as a combination of experience, science and theory.

Knowing and using consumer rights

Admission: free
We are all consumers. It is therefore important to know the basic consumer rights and to be able to use them in the event of a claim. In this course, you will learn from a lawyer, among other things, which regulations apply to a purchase contract, the effectiveness of contracts, clauses and general terms and conditions and why caution is advised with so-called "bait-and-switch offers" and "grandchild tricks". You will also receive information on advice and arbitration centres.

Reduce water consumption, electricity and heating costs sensibly

Anyone can reduce running costs. Wearing jumpers and thick socks in the flat is one option. But the course will explain whether this is the most sensible option. This event will give you tips on heating, correct ventilation and how to save money.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a collection of manual procedures for diagnostics and therapy that aims to stimulate and support the organism's self-healing powers. The holistically orientated healing method, which is primarily used to treat vertebral blockages, migraines and conditions following joint injuries as well as digestive disorders, was developed by the American doctor Andrew Still. The lecture will give you an insight into the history of osteopathy and inform you about its basic assumptions, techniques and possible applications, including practical demonstrations and treatment examples.

"Give me the coal": Homemade Terra Preta for the garden
Location: Knappteich, Yorck area
Admission: free
Terra Preta - the black earth of the Indians - is a way of supplying the soil in the garden with "stable fertiliser". It can be used to build up a fertile perennial humus layer that not only benefits soil health and plant growth. It also helps to bind climate-relevant carbon dioxide. After a brief theoretical introduction to the history, use and production of Terra Preta, this soil will be produced together in the course for the "Knappteichgarten" project.

Origami - Japanese paper folding art (8 - 18 years)

Admission: 4,50 Euro
What is origami? Origami is the art of paper folding from Japan. "Ori" is derived from the Japanese word "Oru". "Oru" means to fold. "Gami" is derived from "Kami" and means paper. In this course we will make a work of art, e.g. a crane, a throwing knife, a balloon or a flower out of paper.
Material costs of 1 EUR are included in the course fee.

Crisis of confidence? - How journalists work in Saxony

People's trust in "the media" has been damaged in recent years, especially in the Free State of Saxony. There are many reasons for this. On the one hand, social and alternative media have become increasingly widespread. On the other hand, established media, for example, are accused of being close to the elite and politics.
Freelance journalist and Chairwoman of the German Journalists' Association Saxony Ine Dippmann explains how professional journalists work today, how they check sources and where they get the content of their reports from. She will discuss current examples with the audience.

Healthy and active ageing - practical course on fall prevention
Location: Pro Seniore Residenz Chemnitz, Salzstraße 40
Admission: free
As we get older, we lose muscle strength and mobility, our senses become weaker and our sense of balance deteriorates. These physiological changes can lead to falls, dependence on care and isolation. For these reasons, it is important to prevent or minimise falls. Every older person can actively do something to significantly minimise the risk of falling through muscle training in combination with balance training. In the practical course, we will demonstrate exercises that can be easily integrated into everyday life and also promote independence and mobility. Please wear comfortable clothing.
The speaker, Wulf Karl, is a health counsellor at the health department of Chemnitz City Council.

Allergies and intolerances in children

Not every food intolerance is an allergy. The body can show intolerance reactions to certain foods for various reasons. The course provides information on intolerances to lactose, fructose, histamine and gluten as well as coeliac disease and food allergies. The causes and symptoms of each are named and explained. You will also receive tips and advice on appropriate nutrition for children with these allergies and intolerances.

Live consciously: A VHS course series on the careful use of the world's resources.
Higher, faster, further - and more and more of everything? Humanity consumes 60 per cent more resources in a year than the earth can regenerate within this period. In short: we are exploiting the earth with our way of life and thus jeopardising the future of coming generations. We invite you to three evenings that show how we can integrate the conscious use of resources into our way of life. It is about suggestions for practical solutions, not about being forced to do without, but about a new quality (of life).

Public guided tour on the history of the Sachsenburg concentration camp
Location: former "snack bar" next to the "Fischerschänke" restaurant, An der Zschopau 1, 09669 Sachsenburg
Admission: free
There was a concentration camp in Sachsenburg from 1933 to 1937. More than 10,000 people were imprisoned here and it paved the way for the system of concentration and extermination camps in Europe. During the guided tour of the site, you will gain an insight into the origins, history and dissolution of the Sachsenburg concentration camp. You will learn about the biographies of prisoners and can visit the former cells and accommodation of the prisoners and guards. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the contents of the tour in greater depth in a small exhibition.

The crises and the monetary system - Part 1: Money
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07

"The monetary system is to blame, we need a new one" or "The crises are getting worse and worse because the banks are creating money out of thin air without collateral" Statements like these are difficult to evaluate without having concrete knowledge of our monetary system. At the same time, money is not an end in itself. It has very specific useful functions in the economy, but also problematic side effects. In two courses, the facts are presented in a generally understandable way: How does our monetary system actually work at its core? What is good about it, what is problematic? With the knowledge gained from two events, participants can learn to categorise various crisis phenomena as well as statements by politicians and experts and critically evaluate suggestions for improvement.
The second event on the topic of banks and payment transactions will take place on Tuesday, 23 April from 6.45 to 8.15 pm.
The events are organised in cooperation with the "Was tun?!" initiative and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Book presentation: "Es brennt. Mordechai Gebirtig, father of the Yiddish song"
Venue: TIETZ, 3rd floor event hall

"Es brennt" is the first German-language biography of Mordechai Gebirtig and a pioneering work against forgetting. Mordechai Gebirtig (1877 - 1942) was a Krakow carpenter and Yiddish poet. He wrote numerous socially critical texts, which he dedicated to the little people of his neighbourhood. Many of his songs have been translated into German for the first time for this book. Author Uwe von Seltmann has compiled numerous new discoveries about the life and work of the Krakow poet from archives in Europe, Israel and the USA. Song examples, photos, contemporary documents and facsimiles from the richly illustrated book will be presented by the author on this evening. Let us invite you on a fascinating journey to Yiddishland!
The author Uwe von Seltmann, born in Müsen in 1964, has lived as a freelance journalist, documentary film-maker and researcher since 2007, mainly in Krakow. Over the past 15 years, he has presented the results of his research in books, lectures, panel discussions and film screenings in Europe, Israel and the USA. He is the director and co-producer of the Yiddish documentary film "Boris Dorfman - A mentsh" (2014).

Anxiety - A video documentary about anxiety disorders

With this film series, we would like to invite you to approach the topic of "living with obstacles" in a special way. We have selected three examples from the wealth of existing films to give you a brief insight into a world characterised by limitations. After the film screening, there will be an opportunity for discussion and dialogue.
In this film, three people affected by anxiety disorders talk about their strong feelings. The manifestations of anxiety are as individual as the causes. For example, three young people talk about school phobia, panic attacks or fear of crowds and confined spaces. The film largely dispenses with images of fear-inducing situations. Instead, the aim is to give those affected space to describe both their distress and their strategies for dealing with their fears. By participating in this film, they show a great deal of courage, overcome their fears and encourage others to face up to their fears and the underlying conflicts.

They all love languages, learn languages and want to speak them. Every vhs.Sprachentreff has a language of specialisation in addition to English. There are - often native speakers - moderators on site. On this evening, they don't take on the role of teachers, but provide impulses and stimulate your conversations.
