The great disasters of the past and some lessons for the future

Disasters cannot be predicted. They do not occur in cycles. And yet, when disaster strikes, we should be better prepared than the Romans were when Mount Vesuvius erupted, the people of the Middle Ages when the plague spread rapidly throughout Europe or the Russians when the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred. But is that us? Haven't we just experienced all the imperial arrogance, bureaucratic rigidity and deep division during the coronavirus pandemic? In his book "Doom", Niall Ferguson takes a historian's and economist's look
historian and economist's view of the most diverse disasters in human history. We must learn our lessons from these historical examples so that future disasters do not lead us to our doom.
Niall Ferguson is one of the best-known and most renowned historians of our time. He was Professor of History at Harvard University and has taught at Oxford University, Stanford University and the London School of Economics and Political Science, among others. He specialises in financial, economic and European history. His book on the First World War published by DVA ("Der falsche Krieg") was a great international success.

What does NSU reappraisal mean and why is it necessary? - An introduction

It has been ten years since a right-wing terrorist network, the National Socialist Underground (NSU), unmasked itself and claimed responsibility for a series of racist murders and attacks. The NSU was first based in Chemnitz, then in Zwickau. It remained undetected for years. Ten people lost their lives in the attacks, dozens were injured, some of them seriously. The number of those who mourned the loss of family members, friends and acquaintances or were traumatised and frightened by the attacks is many times greater.
The process of coming to terms with this complex has not yet been completed. Five people were prosecuted after a trial that lasted five years. However, the neo-Nazi network that made these acts possible is much larger and has remained largely unchallenged. There was also a lack of support from politicians and the wider population.
Based on the question "Was there the NSU?", the "Offener Prozess" project team will shed light on the structures and conditions that made the NSU possible. The question is: What conclusions have the administration, politics and society drawn? What can be done in view of the recent right-wing attacks in Hanau, Halle and Istha? What does it take to overcome right-wing terrorist violence? What can the urban society of Chemnitz contribute?

A few decades ago, extensive orchards characterised the landscape, but today they have often disappeared. The meadows with fruit trees of different ages and different species and varieties often serve as pasture for livestock and are a species-rich habitat. In recent years, they have been rediscovered for ecologically orientated agriculture, but also for personal green spaces. The lecture explains the importance of orchards, highlights the value of untreated fruit and provides all kinds of interesting facts about mowing and pruning fruit trees. In addition to specific variety recommendations, you will receive an overview of funding opportunities when planting a meadow orchard.

Burma, Burma or Myanmar are the national names for a country scarred by history and political conditions. Its landscapes are unique in Southeast Asia. Monks parading through the streets with their sacrificial bowls, hand puppeteers and the culture of single-handed rowers on Inle Lake are all part of a special culture. The world's largest temple complex in Bagan is a must-see: And you can, at least in pictures and authentic contributions by Thomas Friedrich at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

The approx. 90-minute neighbourhood walk is dedicated to the architectural, social and political history of the Fritz Heckert area. It was created as part of the research project "Doing Memory - Historical social space explorations and remembrance work in the former Fritz Heckert area" at Chemnitz University of Technology. Under the direction of Hannah Zimmermann, Irène Mélix and Theo Treihse, students carried out social space explorations, interviews and archive research.
The "Critical Walk" and the neighbourhood magazine "FRITZ" are the results of a research process with the aim of creating urban, remembrance-cultural interventions and contributing to the reappraisal of the NSU complex and the living remembrance of the victims.

Nevertheless, the Arab Spring has left its mark on the region: Islam has lost political influence, young women are emerging with greater self-confidence. The rebellion of the young against the old continues. On the other hand, they feel abandoned by the West, which is now once again courting authoritarian regimes and thus exacerbating the crisis.

Technological change has always been a constant companion of mankind. But never before has change been so rapid, so absolute and so pervasive as it is today due to digitalisation.
The increasing importance of digital services and applications raises questions about their trustworthiness and security. At the same time, technical progress, for example in the form of artificial intelligence or quantum computers, is constantly challenging established cyber security methods. Cyber attacks are increasingly becoming a challenge for business and society.
Professor and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security Claudia Eckert has been researching and teaching in the field of IT security for over 20 years. On this evening, she will address the rapid development of digitalisation in all areas of life and seek answers to the challenges it brings with it.
This event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Erding and SüdOst Adult Education Centres in the district of Munich as well as the German Academy of Science and Engineering.

To be happy at last - many people wish for nothing more. But is happiness really so far away? Or is it more tangible at the edge of life's journey - and just waiting to be discovered?
Christof Jauernig pursued it for a long time in the hamster wheel of a management consultancy. He only realised what happiness really is and how close he had been to it all this time when he radically left it, reinvented himself and went on a tour of Germany with his story of awakening "Thoughts Lost - Unthinking". Along the way, he asked people in 60 cities - including the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre - about their valuable moments in life and compiled a potpourri of happiness ingredients.
This event is a moving and diverse testimony to enchantingly simple, tangible and often free moments of happiness. Compiled from the candidly written contributions of over 1,000 people, the moments presented are a reminder of the preciousness of everyday life. And how close a true feeling of happiness can be.

Terra Preta - the black earth of the Indians from South America - is considered one of the most fertile soils in the world. It can store large quantities of water and guarantees high crop yields for years. Biochar is an important component of Terra Preta. It can be used to build up a fertile and persistent humus layer that not only benefits soil health and plant growth, but also helps to bind climate-impacting carbon dioxide in the soil. The lecture will shed light on the history of Terra Preta and its composition and offer insights into the production and application of the soil substrate in your own garden.

Bookworm or reading muffle? The foundation for an enthusiasm for literature is often laid early on in our children's education. However, it doesn't take much to get children interested in books and reading at an early age. The basic thing is to choose age-appropriate literature: Books that entertain and challenge at the same time.
