Exhibition: 14-18 WAR WAS | Shot with light

Corresponding to the period of the First World War, the Schlossberg Museum, in cooperation with the Department of Romance Cultural Studies/TU Chemnitz, will be showing a photograph from its collection of historical photographs of the war events every month until November 2018 as part of the "14-18 WAR WAS" project.

"Via Prison to the West - The Kaßberg Prison and its History"

This anthology is the first to provide an overview of the former detention centre on the Kaßberg in Chemnitz. The former Stasi remand centre in Karl-Marx-Stadt played a special role throughout the GDR. All those prisoners who were deported to West Germany via the prisoner release programme were held here - over 32,000 people in total. The book describes the place of detention, its role in the GDR prison system and the prisoner release programme. Biographical sketches of former prisoners reflect the views of those affected.

Book presentation "Saxon typewriters"

Reinhold Schubert from Hartmannsdorf, a passionate collector of old typewriters, has written a book about "Saxon Typewriters". In the 20th century, Saxony was not only a stronghold of automobile and lorry manufacturing, it was also a central location for office machine production in Europe. In the book, the author describes over 20 Saxon manufacturers and their products, including Wanderer Werke AG in Chemnitz and GROMA in Markersdorf.

Multimedia lecture: Caribbean - Through the world of the Lesser Antilles

Günter Schneider explored the Caribbean on his holiday trip with the club ship AIDA. In his travel impressions, he talks about the A-B-C islands, he crossed the Panama Canal, experienced the rainforest on Costa Rica and the mangrove forest on Isla Margarita. He went diving off the island of Bonnaire. A visit to the most important fortress in the Caribbean in the harbour city of Cartagena was also a must. Bookings under

Two women fight for the love of a child

Krasnoyarsk 1954: Vika's mother is alive - she's just done something bad. Otherwise she wouldn't be in a Russian labour camp and Vika wouldn't be in a children's home. Then one day Nina Belikova appears at the home. She was released from the camp earlier than her friend Olessia and has promised to look after her little daughter Vika. But when Olessia finally sees her daughter again many years later, Vika has long since accepted Nina as her mother ...

Eleonora Hummel was born in Kazakhstan in 1970 and moved to Dresden with her family in 1982. She has published three novels to date. She was awarded the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize in 2006 for her first novel "Die Fische von Berlin". Eleonora Hummel lives in Dresden.

When you are invited to the "Auf leisen Sohlen..." event in the city library, you have to be quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world.
