Events at Chemnitz City Library in October 2018

Monday, 1 October to 5 October, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: The Manuscripts of Timbuktu (1 to 5 October 2018)

Location: Central Library in the TIETZ, Culture & Countries section

Admission: free

Exhibition opening on the occasion of 50 years of town twinning between Chemnitz and Timbuktu. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Frank Heinrich, Member of the Bundestag.

The importance of Timbuktu as an intellectual centre in the Islamic world in the 14th and 15th centuries is evidenced by writings preserved there in the IHERIAB Institute.

The manuscripts, written in Arabic, are around 700 years old. They bear witness to the Islamisation of West Africa and reflect the journeys of rulers and scholars who stopped off in Timbuktu on their way to Mecca.

Book presentation: "Storm or the invention of football"

Location: Central Library in the TIETZ; Children's World

Admission: free

We travel back in time and are right up close to the invention of football. Find out what the Vikings have to do with it, what role a boy called Storm plays in it and how the invention came about in the first place at this book presentation, which, in addition to the story, also offers some hands-on activities on the subject of football.

Whether overpriced product purchases at the front door or on coffee trips: the legal experts from the Saxony Consumer Centre have a number of tricky cases to solve in order to enforce consumer rights.

New location, new opportunities - district library in the VITA Centre

Location: Vita Centre District Library, Wladimir-Sagorski-Straße 20

The district library presents itself as modern, barrier-free and customer-friendly with extended opening hours: in addition to Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the library will also open on Wednesdays in future.

On the opening day, the Saxony Consumer Advice Centre will provide information on the subject of dubious locksmith services and the young Chemnitz start-up FALTFIX will present its latest innovative folding and plug-in furniture. There will be fun, games and reading activities for children. New customers receive a 20% discount on the annual library fee until Saturday 27 October.

On quiet soles... Stories to listen to

read aloud for anyone with keen ears

Our reading mentors take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. They read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world. Admission to the reading sessions is free.
