Reiner Stach on Franz Kafka

Reiner Stach, born in Rochlitz in 1951, studied philosophy, literature and mathematics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, where he also completed his doctorate on "Kafka's erotic myth". He initially worked as a science editor and publisher of non-fiction books. In 1999, Stach organised the exhibition "Kafka's Bride", in which he presented Felice Bauer's estate, which he had discovered in the USA. The exhibition was shown in Frankfurt, Vienna and Prague, among other places.

Book presentation: Frank Trommler "Dorothee or the afterlife of the old world"

In his novel about the Thomallas, Frank Trommler focuses on the fate of the Saxon economic bourgeoisie in its rise and fall. With the successful establishment of a well-known shoe company in the Ore Mountains, Eugen Thomalla achieves prominence in Chemnitz and cosmopolitanism in Berlin in the 1920s. He married the fun-loving, much younger Dorothee, who struggled to settle into life in the small town, but then gained her independence as a boss in the face of the challenges posed by the Nazi regime, which extended into the family, the war, the wave of refugees and the Russian occupation. While Eugen, worn down by military service and Russian captivity, loses his vitality, she proves herself in the preservation of the world handed over to her. Until she breaks away from it and believes she can leave the old world behind her by fleeing to the West. It is not only her children who testify to her that this cannot succeed.

Marko Martin, summer 1990

At the age of 19, a schoolboy returns home to a state that is no longer a state - in the summer of 1990: no longer the GDR, not yet the Federal Republic. He travels through his homeland, which was foreign to him, even hated. In his questions to acquaintances and strangers, Martin encounters a German tone of the time: aggressive defence of the past and larmoyance in the present. This diary is a testimony from a time when no Ostalgie had yet transfigured the former dictatorship of the petty bourgeoisie into a refuge for the children of the zone.
Marko Martin, born in Burgstädt in 1970, was banned from university in the GDR for political reasons. In May 1989, he travelled to West Germany and studied German, political science and history at the Free University of Berlin. He now works as a freelance author in Berlin.

At Building of Spines, British artist Kate Daley and Chemnitz-based author Gabi Reinhardt create customised books by hand in just a few days. To do this, they talk to people in the Chemnitz libraries (district libraries in the Yorck and Vita centres and the city library). Books are created that portray library users. The finished books will then be added to the libraries' collections.

"Addressee unknown" - A literary testimony against forgetting

Scenic reading with Doron Kaynar-Kissinger and Gad Kaynar-Kissinger of the anti-fascist classic "Addressee Unknown" by Kressmann Taylor - a work that was published in the USA as early as 1938 and is one of the earliest literary warnings against National Socialism The correspondence between the German Martin Schulze and his Jewish-American friend Max Eisenstein unfolds in vivid language. What begins as an expression of deep friendship turns into a harrowing testimony of human and moral alienation with Hitler's rise to power.
The reading is aimed at an audience that wants to critically analyse history and the present - with the question of how quickly humanity can be lost when ideologies take its place. Following the reading, we invite you to an open discussion to talk together about the topicality of this text.
The reading will be performed by two Israeli German-speaking artists whose family roots lie in Germany: the theatre scholar Prof. Dr. Gad Kaynar-Kissinger and the actor Doron Kaynar-Kissinger.

Herzgebirge: Stories from documents - a reading with the Chemnitz medievalist Prof Dr Christoph Fasbender

A widow who founds a retirement home. An artist who has been without a commission for years. A betrayed king's daughter who is suddenly allowed to issue an important document - "Herzgebirge" tells of fates that took place around the Ore Mountains many centuries ago: in the old towns on the outskirts, in Chemnitz, Freiberg and Zwickau, and in the new ones, in Annaberg or Schneeberg, in mountain villages or in the middle of the forest. Their stories come to us from old documents, chronicles and poems from the period between 1230 and 1540. "Herzgebirge" has collected them and now tells us what moved people back then: what drove them and what they dreamed of. But it also shows them as people of today who, however imperfectly, try to shape their world on a small scale.

Shitstorms, sex, self-determination - an unusual look at current topics: When it comes to Jewish life today, the discussion - especially in Germany - usually revolves around the Holocaust, the Arab-Israeli conflict or anti-Semitism. Yet Judaism is the oldest of the monotheistic Abrahamic religions - that means a culture and philosophy that is thousands of years old.
In her latest book, Mirna Funk takes up eight theories from the history of Jewish ideas and brings them into dialogue with the "now".
