Stefan Heym's last speech in Israel
Musical-literary programme with Barbara Sadowski and Peter Gotthardt
It took a superhuman effort for Stefan Heym, already marked by death, to get through his lecture on Heinrich Heine at the Jerusalem Conference in Israel on 13 December 2001. His speech has been preserved on tape, from which three excerpts are presented here. Barbara Sadowski (violin) and Peter Gotthardt (piano) have put together a special programme in his honour.
Peter Gotthardt wrote over 500 film scores, including the hits "Geh zu ihr" and "Wenn ein Mensch lebt" for the film "Die Legende von Paul und Paula", and composed chamber and ballet music, songs, chansons, musicals and oratorios.

Deborah Feldman, "Unorthodox" - Reading
Deborah Feldman grew up completely isolated from the outside world. She lived in one of the strictest Jewish Orthodox communities in New York. At 17, she was engaged to a man she had known for just 30 minutes and married him seven months later. A few years after the birth of her son, Deborah Feldman fled the world into which she had been born. She packed her child into a rented car and drove out of her old life into a new one. Today, Deborah Feldman lives a secular life with her son in Berlin. Deborah Feldman wrote the book "Unorthodox" about her origins, which was a million-seller in the USA.

Hannes Hofbauer, "Enemy Russia: The history of demonisation
The Viennese historian, journalist and publisher Hannes Hofbauer has long been an expert on Eastern Europe. In his lecture, he recounts the history of relations between the West and Russia and traces the economic and geopolitical foundations of mutual resentment. The lecture will be followed by a discussion.

Stefan Heym programme with Inés Burdow
A reading about a great humanist, socialist and critical intellectual with texts, interviews and poems by the writer and his memories of himself, the young Helmut Flieg.
Inés Burdow is an actress, speaker and author. She has been engaged at the Berliner Ensemble, played leading roles in the opera (e.g. Franziska in "Linkerhand" by Moritz Eggert) and works for the cultural radio stations of ARD.

Read aloud: On quiet soles... Stories to listen to
read aloud for anyone with keen ears
When you are invited to the event "Auf leisen Sohlen..." in the city library, you have to be very quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world.
Admission to the reading sessions is free.
