"The Sons of the Great Bear" is a series of Native American novels by Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich, which was particularly successful in the GDR and still has many fans today. In 1966, DEFA made the equally successful film "The Sons of the Great Bear" with Gojko Mitić in the leading role as Chief Tokei-ihto under the same title as the novel cycle. Gojko Mitić talks about his time as DEFA's "Chief Indian". Dr Frank Elstner from Palisander Verlag talks about the life of Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich. Moderated by Michael Kraus

Staff from the consumer advice centre will provide information about food and nutrition. For example, what is the difference between best-before and use-by dates? Does it make sense to consume food supplements? How can I recognise allergens in packaged foods and in loose goods, for example at the bakery? Can I recognise whether I am buying regional food when I go shopping?

Book presentation "My childhood in Chemnitz" by Rolf Schumann

When asked "What is the best way to preserve my grandad's memories for posterity?", Jenny Heinicke from Chemnitz found only one answer for herself and her family: a book. Her grandad Rolf Schumann received a very special copy for his 78th birthday: On several pages, stories of his happy childhood and youth in Hilbersdorf are told and illustrated with pictures from Karl-Marx-Stadt. The tragic events of the Second World War are not left out either. The book is therefore a very personal document of Chemnitz's contemporary history.

Reading competition of the German book trade / city competition

Admission: free
The winners from Chemnitz special schools, secondary schools and grammar schools read in front of a jury of teachers, booksellers and librarians to win the city competition, which also qualifies them for the district competition. The German Book Trade Reading Competition has been organised annually since 1959 by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association in cooperation with bookshops, libraries, schools and other cultural institutions. It is organised under the patronage of the Federal President and is one of the largest nationwide competitions for schoolchildren. More than 600,000 children in Year 6 at all types of school take part every year at around 7,200 schools. www.vorlesewettbewerb.de

We travel back in time and rediscover old children's games and stories. What did our parents and grandparents play and with what? What stories accompanied them? Games of very different kinds come to light and want to be tried out and, of course, played. Children from 7 to 10 years, interested parents and grandparents are very welcome. (max. 25 participants)

Holiday activity Reading hits for holiday kids
Just in time for the winter holidays, the district libraries in the Vita-Center, Yorckgebiet, Einsiedel and Wittgensdorf are once again offering holiday reading in the form of surprise packages under the motto "Reading hits for holiday kids" for all primary and secondary school pupils with a library card. We have packed handy packages with two books each. The reading fun is sweetened with a little snack. The books can be borrowed free of charge and can be borrowed within the usual loan period of four weeks.

Read aloud
On quiet soles... Stories to listen to read aloud for everyone with keen ears
Our reading mentors take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. They read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world. Admission to the reading sessions is free.
