Book presentation: Ellen Schaller, Chemnitz a declaration of love
TIETZ, Central Library, Event Hall
Admission: 3 euros
Ellen Schaller, cabaret artist, actually lives in Dresden. And yet, as a stage performer in the Chemnitz cabaret theatre, she is also a regular visitor to the city. When protests and xenophobic riots broke out in the city centre late last summer, Ellen Schaller decided that the city deserved a pat on the back. That is why she is now publishing the book "Chemnitz. A declaration of love." Over the past few weeks, she interviewed 50 people and asked a diverse mix of people about their favourite places. "I've been working as a cabaret artist in Chemnitz for twenty years now and I've always noticed how many people from Chemnitz speak negatively about their own city," explained Ellen Schaller in preparation for her book. "On the other hand, a media image of Chemnitz has spread around the world, which logically displeases the people of Chemnitz." So Ellen Schaller asked herself: does love for Chemnitz even exist? So she chatted to chefs, physicists, lecturers, dance teachers, qualified chemists, hairdressers, structural engineers, fashion designers, librarians, musicians and politicians. "I met with unknown and famous personalities from the city. I only asked each of them these two questions: What do you love about Chemnitz? And: Do you have a favourite place and an insider tip for the city?" says Schaller. What was the result? The book is due to be published in November. During her research, cabaret artist Ellen Schaller not only discovered new sides to Chemnitz, but also a completely new hobby for herself: the stage artist photographed all the interviewees herself.
