International Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz 2017
Joanna Bator reads from her latest novel "Dark, almost night"
Walbrzych is the name of the small Silesian provincial and mining town that Joanna Bator uses as the setting for all of her novels published to date to tell stories about the big human themes and questions - identity, home, foreignness, flight, expulsion.
Joanna Bator, born in 1968, is recognised as an outstanding voice in contemporary European literature. With her texts, which are as idiosyncratic as they are skilfully and subtly told, the Polish writer and journalist quietly but resolutely addresses current social issues and phenomena and explores them in their historical depths. Her latest novel "Dark, Almost Night" shows how hatred can destroy a society, how quickly the varnish of human morality can tear when people are confronted with change.

Pick a poem - pick a story
For the 15th time, members of the 1st Chemnitz Authors' Association will be providing self-written love poems, sayings and short stories for this event. Hanging on a washing line, the texts await their readers. Picking and taking home is expressly permitted.

Chemnitz Reading Night
On the eve of World Book Day, a largebook market centred around the petrified forest awaits you. Chemnitz authors, literary associations, writing workshops, publishers, bookshops and second-hand bookshops will be presenting themselves. There will also be a varied literary programme, puppet shows, a poetry slam, live music, games and hands-on activities for the whole family.

Anniversary: Literary Quintet for the tenth time
The Literary Quintet is entering its 10th round. Reason enough to give this year's spring edition a slightly different flavour: To mark the awarding of the International Stefan Heym Prize to the Polish writer Joanna Bator, works by Stefan Heym and previous Heym Prize winners will be discussed. On the couch will be Juliane Dietrich (student at Chemnitz University of Technology) and, for the first time, representatives of all three quintet organisers: Tom Schreiber (member of the Student Council), Angela Malz (Head of the University Library) and Prof. Dr. Bernadette Malinowski (Professor of Modern German and Comparative Literature).

Read aloud:On quiet soles... Stories to listen to
performed for everyone with keen ears
When you are invited to the event "Auf leisen Sohlen..." in the city library, you have to be very quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world.
Admission to the reading sessions is free.
