Do you like bobbin lace and wonder whether you should give it a try? Try it out and take the opportunity to get to know an old/new technique called "bobbin lace making".

The days of "tablecloths and the like" are long gone, even in lace-making. We enjoy making modern lace, e.g. 3D jewellery, wall pictures, window pictures, Easter and Christmas decorations just as much as the classic patterns of the past. There should be a lace to suit every taste. An experienced instructor will show you everything you need to know and guide you through your first steps. You don't need any previous knowledge and materials will be provided for the duration of the course. Perhaps you will be inspired to take up a new hobby.

Just because you live a long time doesn't mean you can't keep up. Senior citizens today are active for longer than they were decades ago. They are involved in voluntary work, the neighbourhood and politics. But do they always receive the necessary appreciation for their life's work? And are they addressed respectfully and appropriately in public, in the media and in social professions?
This event takes a closer look at the image of senior citizens in our time and in our city. In addition to a panel discussion, visitors can look forward to an exhibition, various information and sales stands as well as the opportunity for dialogue and discussion.

This event is a co-operation between the Pro Seniore Residenz Chemnitz, the Chemnitz+ Zukunftsregion lebenswert gestalten project and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Namibia is different! It is well known that Namibia was a German protectorate for a short time. That Namibia is characterised by impressive natural landscapes is well known. Every tourist hopes to encounter the Big Five in Namibia. Namibia, about two and a half times the size of Germany, offers encounters with the actual inhabitants such as the Herrero and the Himba. There is also Swakopmund, which is still characterised by the German occupation, and a close connection to the GDR before Namibia's independence in 1989. Thomas Friedrich takes us on a fascinating pictorial journey to the red south of Africa.

Wachkoma - documentaries about people in a vegetative state and their relatives

Two films give a voice to those affected by persistent vegetative state. In documentary and dialogue form, they show the powerlessness and the changes in the lives of those affected and their relatives. The films focus on the partial or complete awakening of patients and the resumption of relationships with them. It is also about emotional communication - without language - and the reactions to it, about the quality and dignity of life and its finiteness. What makes life worth living for patients and their relatives? The film also shows the importance of self-help for relatives and those who have recovered. (Total film length: 117 minutes)

Sometimes a glance into the (exclusively) open depths is enough to gain an impression of mysterious underworlds. However, entering them in person is usually much more lasting, especially if access for visitors is an exception, or if a secret of historical, architectural or archaeological significance spreads out above the destination. The guided tour with graduate physicist Dr habil Hans-Dieter Langer attempts to do justice to these aspects and thus enhance a rather unnoticed piece of the city's history.

Arabic words in the German language

Where do the words "giraffe", "mattress" or "sugar" actually come from? From the Arabic language! The German language borrowed many expressions from Arabic, so-called "Arabisms", especially in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the modern era. Arabic terms originally entered our vocabulary mainly via Romance languages (such as Italian or French) and through migrations. In this course we will look at some examples and their meaning in Arabic.

Religion is a woman's business! - How did women shape Judaism, Christianity and Islam?

Based on an outline of the image of women in the Bible and the Koran, the influence of women in the major world religions will be presented. How did they influence the central male actors and their thoughts and actions in the background? In the lecture by philosopher Dr Anna Maria Martini, M. A. Educational Sciences, and in the subsequent discussion, current issues such as marriage, homosexuality, celibacy, equal rights in the family, veiling and the role of women in churches and religious communities will also be addressed and discussed.

Forum Ehrenamt: Data protection in associations

The European General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) came into force on 25 May 2018. Compared to the Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG), the new regulations contain significantly stricter penalties and thus increase the liability risk for association board members. The necessary changes should therefore be implemented within the coming months. In future, associations must be able to prove that they are acting in compliance with data protection regulations at all times. The course will present the key requirements and accountability obligations arising from the new EU GDPR, which every club and association should scrutinise intensively for adaptation measures.

This event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Community Foundation and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Historical pressed sheet metal work
Lecture series on ancient arts and crafts techniques
Location: TIETZ, Room 4.07

Artisan and archaeotechnician Markus Gruner takes you back to the world of the Bronze Age with his series of lectures and presents manufacturing techniques of arts and crafts such as bronze casting, enamelling and pressed sheet metal production.

Using photographic material and illustrative objects such as tools and semi-finished products, the production of pressed sheet metal from brass or bronze is presented. The process is as follows: First, an ornamental motif is modelled; in Roman culture, for example, remus/romulus, peltae, palmettes, flowers, gods or coin motifs. These are then cast in bronze as a mould or patrix. The motif is then transferred to the sheet metal to be embossed using a hammer over an intermediate lead layer. It is struck until the motif is completely imprinted. The sheet can then be cut to size, polished, perforated and riveted according to its intended use. Archaeological finds of pressed sheet metal remnants show that they adorned wooden boxes, furniture, brooches, shields and belts. This meant that large areas could be serially decorated with little material input, without having to resort to the casting technique.

Research into books looted by the National Socialists has recently led to the discovery of an extensive collection of books in the Bautzen City Library that originally belonged to the Jewish entrepreneurial couple Edith and Georg Tietz. Georg Tietz, owner of the Hermann Tietz department stores (HERTIE), saved himself and his family after the "Aryanisation" by going into exile in the USA, where descendants still live today. On this evening, the author and researcher Dr Robert Langer will report on the unexpected discovery of the once legendary private library. It will also address the question of how it is possible that Nazi looted property can still be found today in public institutions such as libraries and what circumstances led to such collections remaining undiscovered or traces being covered up.

This event is a co-operation between Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Flying, whether for business or pleasure, has become an integral part of our lives. But for those who are afraid of flying or who find it impossible to fly at all, life opportunities are lost. But flying can be a relaxed experience! The instructor, who himself spent 45 years in the air as a military, test and commercial pilot, provides an authentic introduction to the secrets of aviation and discusses your questions in this regard without taboos. Dealing with fears and some exercises are also part of the course. If you like, you can arrange accompanied flights with the instructor.

The speaker, Hellmut Naderer, has visited Cuba several times and presents the country, its people and nature, while also addressing current social issues. A special role is played by German-sponsored agricultural projects that support the improvement of Cuba's food autonomy.

Children on a discovery tour - the world of small animals in city streams
Meeting point: 9 am at the corner of Zwickauer Str. and Barbarossastr
Cost: 26.40 euros

Chemnitz has a large number of unpolluted watercourses. Finding and examining insect larvae, water beetles and the like is a challenge: Which stretch of water is suitable for children? How and where in the river bed should we search and sample? Which group of organisms are they? The "Small animals in streams and rivers" picture fan designed for this purpose can help. The course topic is highlighted in the context of education for sustainable development and is aimed at educators, environmental educators and other interested parties.

The sampling starts at 9 a.m. at the corner of Zwickauer Str. and Barbarossastr. If you want to lend a hand, you should bring rubber boots.

From 10 a.m., the course topic will be introduced and the samples taken will be analysed at the TIETZ. You can bring your own magnifying glasses to gain an insight into the diversity of this small animal world.
