Event organised by the VHS
Cheering goals and looking the other way? Football World Cup without human rights?
To mark the start of the World Cup in Russia, the adult education centre will be holding an event on Thursday, 7 June 2018, from 7 to 9 p.m. dedicated to the dark side of major sporting events. The event will take place in the TIETZ, stage on the ground floor. The speaker, Ronny Blaschke, works as a freelance journalist for various media outlets, specialising in violence and discrimination in sport. Admission is free.
This event is a co-operation between the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
Despite all the media attention, the fact that major sporting events have been made possible by the erosion of human rights for years will not be mentioned much at this World Cup: Corruption, discrimination and displacement are the order of the day, millions in taxpayers' money seeps away into dark coffers. Labourers from North Korea also worked on the construction sites in Russia. Freedom of assembly was already severely restricted during the 2017 Confederations Cup. Furthermore, migrants and homosexuals are massively disadvantaged.
This event will place the situation in Russia in a wider context and ask: How should democracies and football fans respond? How can local civil society be strengthened without claiming moral superiority?
