No other work by Stefan Heym has been translated into other languages as often and has gone through as many editions as his World War II epic "The Crusaders", published in the United States in 1948. The novel about the liberation of Europe from fascism and the betrayal of ideals, which was strongly influenced by his own experiences as a sergeant in the US army, made him internationally known as a writer and for the first time also to the German reading public. The book was published in the GDR in 1950 under the title "Crusaders of Today" and in the Federal Republic of Germany almost simultaneously as "The Bitter Laurel".
