"Stalin leaves the room": Stefan Heym's political journalism in the GDR - Annotated reading
Venue: Stefan Heym Forum, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20
Admission: 3 euros, reduced 1.50 euros
The infamous 11th Plenum of the SED Central Committee 60 years ago marked a profound turning point in GDR cultural policy. All tentative attempts at liberalisation were brought to an abrupt end; numerous artists, writers and filmmakers were sidelined for years, their works banished to the archives. Stefan Heym was one of the most important personalities targeted by the SED. Not least his political journalism, in which he repeatedly promoted criticism and open discussion of the country's problems, was a thorn in the side of the leading comrades.
