Annual report 2013 with balance sheet and suggestions
The annual report on the European work of the City of Chemnitz for 2013 has been published by the city's EU office in the form of a handy A-4 format brochure. The fifth annual report now comprises 32 pages and is available free of charge from the EU Office in the City Hall on the Market Square, can also be picked up from the information desks in the City Hall on the Market Square and in the Moritzhof Civic and Administration Centre and is also available online as a PDF version at www.chemnitz.de > The City of Chemnitz > European Work.
The 2013 annual report takes stock and at the same time provides interested parties with suggestions for new cooperation opportunities and EU projects. The brochure provides an insight into the day-to-day work of the City of Chemnitz's EU Office and its director Pia Sachs. It presents examples of projects initiated and/or supported together with partners that have been financed with the help of European Union funding programmes. Associations, organisations and citizens received support from the city's EU office when applying for and implementing funding.
Explanations of the project, comments from individual participants and illustrative photos emphasise how the European Union promotes development in Chemnitz: Programmes such as Youth in Action, the Lifelong Learning Programme, Objective 3, the European Social Fund or the European Regional Development Fund provided many local impulses: for example, small businesses in the Sonnenberg district were supported in order to secure jobs, create training opportunities, maintain the location and, not least, revitalise the area as a whole. The redesign of the inner-city Annenplatz square with EU funding has brought about a qualitative development of the residential neighbourhood and the city itself for residents, walkers and passers-by. Cross-border projects within the framework of "Youth in Action" and "Objective 3" also offered young people in particular a good and stimulating opportunity to realise their potential and come into contact with their peers from the neighbouring countries of the Czech Republic and Poland.
The EU Coordinator used events in the Europe Week programme, the European Mobility Week and the European Week of Local Democracy to bring current issues across Europe to the attention of Chemnitz residents. Chemnitz's involvement in the network of major European cities EUROCITIES - also the subject of the annual report - also provided a good opportunity in 2013 for Chemnitz to influence the organisation of legislation in Brussels as well as for joint initiatives to overcome current difficulties between the network's more than 140 member cities. Last but not least, membership provides comprehensive information on funding calls, which the City of Chemnitz's EU office prepares and makes available to stakeholders in line with the relevant topics.
