European Local Democracy Week
Action week from 15 to 21 October in Chemnitz with art event and simulation game
Galerie Laterne is kicking off the European Week of Local Democracy with a mail art campaign. In the project "How do you see Europe?", young people are encouraged to use art by post to reflect on their ideas about the European Union and their perspectives. Chemnitz University of Technology is exhibiting the resulting letters, maps, objects and documentation from 15 October to 5 November in the Central Lecture Hall Building. The vernissage is on 15 October at 7.30 pm.
Two days later, on 17 October at 5.15 p.m., Christian Schweiger will ask the guests taking part in the discussion in a lecture: "How European is Chemnitz?" - also in the Central Lecture Hall Building, Reichenhainer Straße 90.
The Odradek reading café is enriching this year's action week with a reading stage entitled "Irre werden". On the evening of 18 October at 8 pm, guests will be released from the pressure of having to function, fit in, not offend and just not stand out. All texts can be brought along and shouted out. Musical accompaniment is provided by Lake Felix and Rudi Fischerlehner.
Anyone who has always wanted to slip into the role of a head of government or member of parliament of the European Union and actively negotiate compromises and represent personal interests can experience this in a simulation on 20 October from 10 am to 5 pm. In a simulation game, the Young European Federalists will demonstrate a proper legislative procedure involving the Parliament, Council and Commission.
For the 10th edition of the European Local Democracy Week, the Council of Europe is focussing on "Citizen participation, consultation and engagement: for a thriving local democracy". The aim is to draw citizens' attention to local democracy with Europe-wide campaigns to encourage their participation in the local democratic process. The Council of Europe also wants to publicise its work and promote respect for human rights and mutual respect.
The aim is to promote dialogue between population groups and involvement in the local communities.
