European Local Democracy Week
Action days with participation and commitment - from 10 October in Chemnitz
For the European Week of Local Democracy, which is being held this year under the title "Local Democracy: Building Trust", all citizens are invited to take part in events with discussion panels and hands-on activities.
With the exhibition: "Umbruch Ost. Lifeworlds in Transition" at the Deutsches SPIELEmuseum Chemnitz on 10 October will provide new information about industrial culture and everyday life in German reunification since 1990. The European Week of Local Democracy will enrich the museum on 15 October with a European Games Afternoon with a game on EU legislation and a game on German-Polish history.
On 13 October, the topic of "Perceived and real security" will be discussed with Prof. Dr Rita Haverkamp and Police Commissioner Sonja Penzel in the House of Trade Unions. On the same day, all citizens will also have the opportunity to express their concerns, particularly on the subject of the environment, via the "Telephone Citizens' Consultation Hour". (Contact in the programme) In addition, every Monday and Tuesday the district pilots offer open discussions in the Sonnenberg and Zentrum districts. The aim is to promote a dialogue about living together in the multicultural city of Chemnitz and to initiate new perspectives.
As a sustainable result of an EU project on youth participation, the city of Chemnitz has been taking part in the European Week of Local Democracy, which takes place annually around 15 October, for several years now. The action week is initiated by the Council of Europe. The main aim of all the activities is to draw citizens' attention to local democracy in Chemnitz in order to promote open-minded dialogue, mutual tolerance and openness to the world at local level.
