European Energy Award in Gold again for Chemnitz
Award ceremony at the Saena Experience Exchange on 28 November, approx. 11 a.m., TIETZ, event hall
On Tuesday, 28 November, the city of Chemnitz will once again receive the European Energy Award (eea) in gold alongside other Saxon municipalities. The award ceremony will take place as part of an exchange of experiences between the Saxon eea municipalities, to which the Saxon energy agency Saena has invited for this day (from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.) in the event hall of the TIETZ.
The award ceremony will begin at around 11 a.m. with a welcome address by Dr Gerd Lippold, State Secretary at the Saxon State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture. Mayor Knut Kunze will accept the award on behalf of Chemnitz.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
The City of Chemnitz is one of 61 municipalities in Europe to be honoured with the European Energy Award in Gold this year. Every four years, external auditors review the city's commitment to climate protection. The city of Chemnitz has held gold status since 2015, and this year Chemnitz achieved 78.2 per cent of the possible points.
"Despite the renewed award, the city must continue to intensify its efforts for climate protection," says Carina Kühnel, Head of the City of Chemnitz's Environment Department. Important areas in which the city's climate protection efforts must be further intensified include
- Expansion of renewable energies, sector coupling, hydrogen strategy, also as a location factor for industry and commerce - Climate-neutral administration by 2035
- Comprehensive circular economy
- Utilisation of regional resources
- Significant increase in pedestrian and cycle paths
- greenhouse gas-free drives for commercial vehicles (CVAG, ASR).
This year, Chemnitz is celebrating its 30-year membership of the Climate Alliance in addition to its eea gold re-certification. Europe's largest network of cities works in partnership with indigenous rainforest peoples to protect the global climate. "In addition to their value as a local habitat, the rainforests are of inestimable value for the preservation of biodiversity, with around two thirds of all known animal and plant species. But they also play an important role in global climate regulation and thus in mitigating the consequences of climate change," says Carina Kühnel.
European Energy Award
The eea is the Europe-wide quality management system and certification procedure used to record and evaluate a municipality's energy and climate protection activities in a structured manner. The eea serves to save energy, utilise energy efficiently and increase the use of renewable energies. In addition to increasing energy and cost efficiency, participation in the programme provides meaningful key figures and sound documentation of municipal activities.
Ongoing support from an eea consultant and annual monitoring by an accredited auditor ensure that the City of Chemnitz consistently pursues and achieves the desired goals.
