European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025: New phase begins two years after winning the title
Call for project ideas for the European Workshop for Culture and Democracy - City of Chemnitz forms coordination team
Tomorrow marks the anniversary of Chemnitz being awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2025. Today, the process takes a further step: with the team presentation and announcement of the call for project ideas to fulfil the European Workshop for Culture and Democracy programme of the application book by the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH. Work on individual projects from the book will continue in parallel.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the various phases that we have gone through over the past six years. A wide range of activities have already shown what the European Capital of Culture 2025 can feel like."
A few examples from this year: the first works of art have found their place on the Purple Path in the cultural region and the first Maker Hubs, places where makers can exchange ideas, have started work. At the KOSMOS Festival, 50,000 visitors celebrated the festival for democracy. At Makers United in the Stadthalle, makers big and small came together to tinker and try things out. The European Peace Ride travelled through Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany as an ambassador for peace. Construction progress can be seen at the Hartmannfabrik, home to the Welcome Centre and the European Workshop for Culture and Democracy in 2025. Now the in-depth work of programme development begins.

The City of Chemnitz is supporting the process in the form of a coordination team within the Mayor's department, which was established for the Capital of Culture programme. Under the leadership of Head of Cultural Operations Ferenc Csák, the city is providing all necessary and possible support for the GmbH in the realisation of the overall "Capital of Culture" project. The necessary players from all departments of the administration, as well as the municipal companies and other parties involved in the project, work together. The task of the team is also to secure the legacy of the Capital of Culture process beyond the actual title year as sustainably as possible.
