European Capital of Culture 2025 - Supervisory Board members proposed for future GmbH

The future limited liability company for the organisation and implementation of the European Capital of Culture 2025, which is to be founded in April, will be overseen by a nine-member supervisory board.
The Supervisory Board, which will consist of representatives from the Free State, the federal government, the City of Chemnitz, the region and the business community, will be elected by the City Council on 5 May 2021.

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze presented the City of Chemnitz's proposal for the composition of the members by name to the Culture Committee today.

The following are proposed as members of the Supervisory Board:

  • As a representative of the Chemnitz City Council:
    one Supervisory Board member to be elected by the City Council
  • As representative of the Free State of Saxony:
    Ministerialdirigent Sebastian Hecht, Head of the Culture and Tourism Division in the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism
  • As representative for cross-border projects:
    Arnošt MARKS, Ph.D., MSc., Vice Dean for Creative, International and Innovative Activities and Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, Art and High Technology at the University of West Bohemia, Plzen
    Arnošt Marks worked in the Government Office of the Czech Republic, was Deputy Minister for Research, Development and Innovation and Vice-Chairman of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation.
  • As a representative with Capital of Culture experience:
    Mikko Fritze, Director of the Finnish Institute for German-speaking Countries in Berlin
    Mikko Fritze has headed various Goethe-Instituts, most recently the Goethe-Institut Netherlands. As head of the Tallinn2011 Foundation in Estonia, he was also responsible for the concept, programme, staff development and management as well as national and international representation of the emerging European Capital of Culture Tallinn.
  • As a representative of the regional economy:
    Dr Micaela Schönherr, CFO at Prefere Resins in Berlin
    Micaela Schönherr has many years of experience in successful management in the global mechanical engineering and value-adding industry as CFO and CEO, including She is President of the BBL association Niners Chemnitz e.V. and was also involved as a member of the steering group in the application phase for the European Capital of Culture 2025.
  • As a representative of the region:
    Bernd Birkigt, Mayor of the town of Oelsnitz/Erzgeb.
    Bernd Birkigt is Chairman of the Friends of the European Cultural Region Chemnitz 2025 Association, which now brings together 21 municipalities in the region.
  • Representing the city of Chemnitz:
    Nancy Gibson, Director of the Chemnitz Municipal Music School
    The former opera, oratorio and concert singer was a member of the music theatre ensemble at Chemnitz Municipal Theatre for 15 years. She was also involved in the application phase for the European Capital of Culture 2025 as Deputy Chair of the Programme Council.

In the next few days, the Federal Government will make a proposal for a member of the Supervisory Board from the portfolio of the State Minister for Culture and the Media.

In addition, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze is to be elected to the Supervisory Board.
