Europe Week 2018 in Chemnitz from 2 to 15 May
Europe Days for youth and cultural work and European Neighbourhood Festival
A wide range of events will be held in the city of Chemnitz to mark the nationwide Europe Week from 2 to 15 May. The Europe Week will open with the exhibition "Hungarian Traces in Chemnitz" on 2 May in the exhibition room of the town hall. It will focus on the life and work of Hungarian immigrants in Chemnitz.
The Institute for European Studies at the Technical University is organising a citizens' conference lasting several days from 4 to 6 May under the theme "Europe for all" with the aim of drawing up a catalogue of EU political demands for politicians. Citizens are invited to discuss their attitudes, ideas and wishes with regard to the EU.
The "Parade of Diversity" on 5 May is all about working together to shape an inclusive life. To mark the European Day of People with Disabilities, the citizens of the city are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to meet and join the march for a common coexistence. Among others, the residential centre for severely physically disabled people of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Chemnitz will take part, whose residents will creatively engage with Europe as part of their own educational programme.
On Europe Day, 9 May, the solaris Förderzentrum für Jugend & Umwelt gGmbH Sachsen invites you to its information evening "Europe to GO", accompanied by music and culinary delights. The event will provide detailed insights into the EU funding programmes for young people's opportunities to work abroad in Europe.
Another highlight of Chemnitz Europe Week is the international theatre festival "NONSTOP EUROPA!". From 11 to 14 May, theatre productions from Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Austria, Germany and Switzerland will be performed at the Chemnitz Schauspielhaus. Local and European drama students will present amusing and confrontational productions and projects under the heading "Young Europe". The highlight of the festival is the premiere of the play "Seven Ghosts", which won the Chemnitz Theatre Prize for Young Drama in 2018.
Background:
The Europe Week around Europe Day on 9 May, on which the foundation stone for today's European Union was laid in 1950 with the declaration by French Foreign Minister Robert Schumann, serves to experience and discuss Europe at a local level. A number of different events are being organised in the city of Chemnitz this year to mark the occasion.
