Europe in dialogue: Press and press landscape in Poland

On Thursday 24 October at 7 pm, interested parties are invited to an evening discussion about the media and press landscape in Poland. The two journalists Andreas Lamm and Michał Kokot will talk about their experiences and shed light on the current debates in Poland and the background to them.

In the last few years of the national-conservative PiS government in Poland, many observers feared for the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the media. Journalists and other media professionals spoke of curbs, political influence, the closure and concentration of important media houses and growing political polarisation. With the parliamentary elections in autumn 2023 and the victory of the opposition, many were hoping for change and greater liberalisation. Initial initiatives to restructure the media landscape have been widely discussed since then.
Michał Kokot works for the Polish daily newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza" and has been working for the foreign desk since 2013. He also regularly writes for German newspapers.
Andreas Lamm works at the European Institute for Press and Media Freedom in Leipzig and has been dealing with the topics of the evening for many years.
The event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
