Europe in Chemnitz: Invitations from 3 to 11 May to the 20th Europe Week

Lecture series, films and exhibition on the topic of migration - School centre provides information with a refugee day - Neighbourhood festival on Saturday, 10 May, this time on the topic of disabled sports

This year's 20th Europe Week is a special event not only because of the anniversary, but also in view of the European elections scheduled for 25 May 2014. Two starting points, therefore, to take a closer look at Europe in detail. This year's Europe Week programme in Chemnitz once again offers invitations to take part in an extraordinarily diverse range of activities.

Pia Sachs, EU Coordinator of the City of Chemnitz: "In order to honour and celebrate the 20th anniversary in a fitting manner, all Chemnitz residents and all other Europe enthusiasts are cordially invited to actively participate in the Europe Week, to attend events and hands-on activities, lectures and discussions. With the focus on migration, the 20th Europe Week is taking up an important and much-discussed topic."

The Europe Week organisers in Chemnitz are addressing the main topic of migration with projects and lectures on refugee and asylum policy. An exhibition in the new lecture theatre building at Chemnitz University of Technology (Reichenhainer Straße 90) will provide information about the situation of refugees in crisis areas and invite you to a series of lectures with speakers from Amnesty International and the Federal Ministry for Migration and Refugees as well as representatives from the Bulgarian and Romanian embassies. A stand dedicated to Europe Week and information about the EU will be set up every day during Europe Week on the Mensa forecourt. With the help of various games, visitors can also test their

knowledge about the EU can be tested. The Evangelical School Centre in the Sonnenberg district of Chemnitz (Ludwig-Richter-Straße 21) is organising the first Chemnitz Refugee Day on Saturday, 10 May from 10 am to 4 pm under the motto "What can we do?". Against the backdrop of the Roma issue, the Odradek reading café (Leipziger Straße 3) will present the film "Just the wind" on Sunday, 11 May and will also welcome interested parties to a discussion with speakers afterwards.

The diversity of the topic of Europe is also demonstrated in the Europe Week programme in Chemnitz, for example by the numerous film screenings organised by the Saxon Children's and Youth Film Service in the Kinderfilmhaus (Neefestraße 99), a workshop on lifelong learning and a film screening in the Kinderfilmhaus (Neefestraße 99).The programme includes numerous film screenings organised by the Saxon Children's and Youth Film Service at the Children's Film House (Neefestraße 99) , a workshop on lifelong learning at the German SPIELEmuseum in Chemnitz (Neefestraße 78a), the exhibition of works by two artists from Mulhouse, Chemnitz's French twin city, in the project room of the Chemnitz Artists' Association (Moritzstraße 19, see also PM 202 from 10.04.) and the plant exchange with which the Intercultural GardenChemnitz (Franz-Mehring-Straße 39) is participating in Europe Week on Saturday, 10 May.

The European Neighbourhood Festival is also part of the Europe Week programme in Chemnitz this year : this time the focus is on disabled sports - the meeting point for interested parties with and without disabilities is on Saturday, 10 May from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in and around the multi-generational house (Irkutsker Straße 15). You are invited to take part in numerous activities to find out more and, of course, to actively participate.

Background: In the 28 member states of the European Union, the founding of the union of states is celebrated every year on 9 May. And because the European Union is of course not just something that happens in the capital, Brussels, but can and should be shaped by citizens at national, regional and local levels, the annual Europe Week, which is organised around 9 May, is also held in Brussels. The annual Europe Week organised around 9 May also invites people in Chemnitz to take part in the numerous events of the action week and not to miss out on the chance to feel part of Europe once again.

The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, put it this way in his welcoming address: "Like no other event, Europe Week offers citizens the opportunity to get a picture of Europe. The EU offers us all many important advantages. More than 60 years of peace, prosperity and freedom. The security of living in a constitutional state. Knowing that you can move to another EU member state at any time to live, work or study."
