EU funding programme: Construction work to speed up public transport on bus route 31 has been completed
This morning, the new traffic lights on Beyer/Paul-Jäkel-Straße will be put into operation, thus creating the conditions for the acceleration of bus route 31 in the entire section between the central bus stop and the Flemming area.
In recent weeks, several traffic lights on Barbarossastrasse have already been prepared for the acceleration of the bus route. The following traffic lights were included in the construction measures for the acceleration concept:
- West-/Barbarossastraße
- Barbarossa/Henriettenstrasse
- Limbacher/Barbarossastrasse
- Beyer-/Paul-Jäkel-Straße.
The total cost of the acceleration of bus route 31 is approx. 115,000 euros.
At the Beyer-/Paul-Jäkel-Straße traffic lights, left-turners will in future be guided safely by left-turn signals on the approaches to Paul-Jäkel-Straße. This is intended to minimise conflicts between left-turning drivers and those driving straight ahead.
Since the beginning of 2012, the city of Chemnitz has been implementing an EU funding programme to expand the city's traffic management system. The programme focuses primarily on measures to speed up local public transport. The European Union is providing grants totalling €2.65 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the overall project, which has an estimated budget of €3.8 million.
In the last three years, 35 individual measures have already been implemented at traffic lights. In 2014, this initially related to the final measures to speed up bus route 21 on Frankenberger Straße (commissioning of the Frankenberger/Helmholtzstraße and Frankenberger/Huttenstraße traffic lights).and Frankenberger/Huttenstraße in April 2014) and the light rail lines 5/6 (522) on Annaberger Straße (commissioning of the Annaberger/Rößlerstraße traffic lights in July 2014).
