Equal Pay Day
Equal pay for women and men - action day on Saturday, 19 March 2016
The worldwide Equal Pay Day is organised to draw attention to the often unequal pay of women and men. Pia Hamann, Equal Opportunities Officer for the City of Chemnitz, provides information about this.
On Saturday, 19 March 2016 at 11 a.m., trade unions, political parties, women's initiatives and interested citizens will meet in front of Chemnitz City Hall to inform the public and discuss the issue.
Media representatives are cordially invited.
In Germany, women currently earn on average 21.6 per cent less than men. The main reason for this is the above-average proportion of women in lower-paid sectors. In addition, women are more frequently in part-time and marginal employment and less frequently in management positions. Women interrupt and reduce their employment more frequently and for longer periods of time for family reasons, e.g. to raise children and care for relatives. Individual and collective wage negotiations have not been able to make a lasting contribution to ending the poorer evaluation of "typical women's jobs". Pay inequality is a consequence of patriarchal role perceptions.
