Engineering company imk automotive opens new headquarters in old spinning mill
Today, 24 months after the ground-breaking ceremony, imk automotive is opening its company headquarters in Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain. Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "imk automotive stands for future technology from Chemnitz and is demonstrating its roots in the region with the move to the old spinning mill. Founded 12 years ago as a start-up, the company has built up a good reputation, also internationally, and has grown steadily. The fact that it chose a historic building in Chemnitz for its expansion requires courage and foresight. The carefully renovated spinning mill is a truly impressive company headquarters."
The lower spinning mill was built in 1820 and later named after the furniture manufacturer Ernst Merkel. It is one of the last surviving earlier spinning mills built by the Saxon church architect Christian Friedrich Uhlig (1774-1848). It is thus a testimony to Saxony's early industrial buildings. The building has been used for furniture production since 1895 as the Merkel furniture frame factory. Production only ceased in 1990. imk automotive invested almost 3.5 million euros in the conversion, with around 1 million euros coming from subsidies from the Free State of Saxony and the European Union.
imk automotive develops products and manufacturing processes for well-known car manufacturers from all over the world. The company currently employs just under a dozen people.
