Election of lay judges in Chemnitz: end of the application period
Until 23 March, citizens of the city of Chemnitz were able to apply to be lay assessors in juvenile and adult criminal law or as honorary judges.
According to the provisional final result, around 750 people from Chemnitz applied to be lay assessors for adult criminal law and around 370 for juvenile criminal law.
Around 170 people from the administrative court district have applied to be honorary judges at the administrative court.

Procedure for lay judges for adult and juvenile criminal law
All suitable applications are placed on the City of Chemnitz's nomination lists. These will then be confirmed by the city council (adult lay judges) or youth welfare committee (juvenile lay judges) in June 2018. They will then be made available for public inspection for one week. This gives everyone the opportunity to raise objections in justified cases.
The lists of candidates must be submitted to the Chemnitz district court by 15 August 2018 at the latest. An election committee consisting of a judge, an administrative official from the city and seven representatives will select the number of lay judges and assistant lay judges required for the next term of office from the list of candidates submitted. The election committee will inform the candidates accordingly.
Procedure for honorary judges at the Administrative Court
The President of the Administrative Court determines the required number of honorary judges for the next term of office. All suitable applications will be placed on a list of nominees of the City of Chemnitz, which the City Council will decide on in November 2018. Following approval, the list of candidates is submitted to the President of the Administrative Court of Chemnitz.
At the Administrative Court, an election committee consisting of the President of the Administrative Court, an administrative official appointed by the state government as well as seven confidential counsellors will select the number of honorary judges required for the next term of office from the list of candidates submitted. The election committee will inform the candidates accordingly.
