Election of lay judges in Chemnitz: Apply now!
Until 23 March, citizens of the city of Chemnitz can apply to become lay assessors in juvenile and adult criminal law or honorary judges. Volunteers are appointed to the local court, regional court and administrative court in Chemnitz.
With their vote, the lay judges have the same weight as a professional judge during a trial, during deliberations and when voting on the judgement. They therefore participate directly in the administration of justice.
Many applications have already been received, but the required minimum number of applicants has not yet been reached, particularly in the area of youth lay judges. Any citizen of the City of Chemnitz who is at least 25 years old, a German citizen and has sufficient knowledge of German can apply. Legal knowledge is not necessary; rather, the office of lay assessor should be approached impartially and common sense should be utilised. Experience in the field of child and youth education is desirable in the case of youth lay judges.
According to the law, there should be at least twice as many candidates on the list of nominations for the election of lay judges than are actually required. This enables the election committee to organise a selection process.
