Easter offspring at Chemnitz Zoo
A female Bactrian camel foal was born at Chemnitz Zoo on Easter Sunday. It is the fifth offspring of the experienced camel mare "Siri", who moved into the zoo in 2007. The sire, stallion "Dschingis", has lived at the zoo since 1999. Mother and child are doing well and can also be seen in the outdoor enclosure in good weather; in bad weather they have the opportunity to retreat. The foal has not yet been given a name.
The Bactrian camels shown in zoos are domestic animals. Today, there are only small populations of their wild ancestors left in China and Mongolia, and their status is estimated to be "endangered".
As domestic animals, however, Bactrian camels are still widespread in Central Asia today. They are used as pack animals and as a source of milk and meat.
Don't forget - until Friday there are short guided tours of certain animals or groups of animals every day at 11 a.m. and an alpaca walk in the zoo at 3 p.m.!
