Easter at the zoo and wildlife park
A tip from Chemnitz Zoo for those who want to spend Easter in the warmth: in the tropical house you can not only watch free-flying birds in cosy temperatures, observe spider monkeys and pygmy hippos and consider whether sloths are really as lazy as is generally assumed (e.g. at the "sloth meeting" on weekends and public holidays at 2 pm).
From Good Friday, visitors have the opportunity to see a capybara cub bathing every day at 2.15 pm. This offer extends over the Easter days and Easter holidays in Saxony.
The droll sight is preceded by a sad story: the mother and the other siblings did not survive the birth. As capybaras are nest fledglings and eat solid food early on and are independent, it was decided to give the young animal a bottle to help it get started, so to speak. It now eats solid food reliably and has grown considerably.
As the cub's father seems very insecure about the offspring and the whole situation, the cub currently only has access to the enclosure, where the father is also staying, when accompanied by a keeper. Otherwise, it lives in the indoor enclosure, which is not visible to visitors.
By the way - from Good Friday, children will be welcomed to the zoo with a chocolate bunny and on Easter Sunday, the wildlife enclosure will host the traditional Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. (while stocks last). The wildlife park also opens its gates at 10 a.m. on this day.
