Construction work on Dresdner Straße/Thomas Mann Platz completed ahead of schedule
Due to optimisations in the construction process, Dresdner Straße/Thomas Mann Platz was opened to traffic ahead of schedule on 1 October 2018.
The construction work, which began on 28 May 2018, was originally scheduled to be completed by 2 November 2018 in the section between August-Bebel-Straße and the petrol station after Gellertstraße.
In the area of Thomas-Mann-Platz, a new bus stop was built in the landward and cityward direction (at the level of the car wash) to improve accessibility to Sachsenallee. In order to avoid a backlog in the intersection areas, bus bays of a length that complies with the regulations have been built. The entrance and exit areas have been designed so that the buses can stop right at the edge of the platform. To achieve this, it was necessary to move the existing pavements to the rear and to relocate the cables (e.g. electricity, telecoms, lighting, traffic lights). The bus stops have been made barrier-free and have been given a semi-rigid surface layer in the road area to prevent or minimise deformation of the road surface when the buses brake. The road section between August-Bebel-Straße and Thomas-Mann-Platz was constructed with an asphalt thickness of 38 cm due to the existing damage. In the other areas, the asphalt concrete was laid at a thickness of 26 cm.
The optimisation was achieved by bundling personnel and thus carrying out work at the same time. Furthermore, clearing the construction site turned out to be easier than expected.
Remaining work is currently being carried out in the pavement area. STRABAG NL Wilkau Haßlau was commissioned with the construction work. The construction costs amount to approx. 782,000 euros.
