E-books, streaming, e-learning and research assistance
To mark Libraries Day on 24 October, Chemnitz City Library is focusing on its online services
Libraries are an important source of information, especially in times of the coronavirus pandemic, and their media not only support people in their school and extracurricular education, but also make an important contribution to leisure activities. In addition to borrowing physical media, the use of numerous online services has been firmly established for years.
Customers of Chemnitz City Library can read e-books and download audio books from the Onleihe, stream films on the filmfriend portal or use the wide range of e-learning courses. Pupils will find valuable databases such as the Munzinger information service , Duden-Basiswissen Schule and other reference works for currently necessary homeschooling among the online offerings. Library customers can use the Genios database to search hundreds of newspapers and magazines for current topics and articles.
During the coronavirus-related lockdown, the Chemnitz City Library's digital services were in demand like never before. The trend continued even after the lockdown. Even after the libraries reopened on 4 May, e-books and the like were used much more frequently than in the previous year. For example, the use of e-lending - the use of e-books, e-audio and e-paper - increased by 40 per cent in the first half of 2020 compared to the previous year.
The wealth of services offered by Chemnitz City Library shows that the balancing act between library as an online source of information and library as a place to meet and communicate is working well. It offers Chemnitz residents a wide range of media for (almost) every interest and life situation, as well as various options for use - analogue and digital, classic and modern, individual and communicative.
