Drought, storms and bark beetles: the state of our forests
Adult education centre: Kick-off event for the series on raw material and supply security "What's left for us?" - 14 March, 7 p.m., TIETZ, Room 5.40
On Tuesday, 14 March, from 7 to 8.30 pm, interested parties are invited to an event entitled "Drought, storms and bark beetles: the current state of our forests" at the TIETZ, room 5.40. Forestry expert Bernd Ranft will provide an up-to-date overview of the problems that Saxony's forests have been facing for the past few years. The event is the first in a series on raw material and supply security entitled "What's left for us?".

The state of the forest in Saxony has been developing critically, especially since 2018. Extreme weather conditions combined with an unprecedented mass proliferation of the bark beetle have led to a catastrophic situation in the forests. The foothills of the Ore Mountains and the lower areas of the Ore Mountains are particularly affected by this development. In midsummer 2022, several hundred hectares of forest were also destroyed by forest fires, some of which were massive. The Saxon Switzerland National Park suffered particularly extensive fire damage.
Bernd Ranft has been head of the Chemnitz forest district since 2019. His presentation will shed light on the current situation in Saxony's forests and the resulting challenges. He will then invite everyone to discuss the future of the local forests. The event is a co-operation between the State Enterprise Sachsenforst and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

The series of events on raw material and supply security organised by the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is being continued. Over the next few months, regional experts will be focussing on the most elementary raw materials - water, soil and wood - in the context of contemporary, climate-related considerations.
