The Chemnitz Fire Department's drone unit has been in existence for a year. An occasion for the members of the unit, most of whom work on a voluntary basis, to take stock.
From 1 February 2024 to 1 February 2025, the drone unit was requested for 33 missions to support the work of the fire service. The majority of these were fire operations. In addition, there were four alerts to search for people, one investigation of a partially collapsed building and one search for escaped water buffaloes to avert danger.
In order to remain familiar with the technology and gain further experience, several exercises took place last year. Neighbouring volunteer fire brigades such as those from Adorf, Penig and Chursdorf as well as the THW with their drones also took part in some of the exercises. Together, they prepare for cooperation in the event of major emergencies.
In addition, the members of the Chemnitz Fire Brigade drone unit shared their experience in using the technology with a student from Chemnitz University of Technology, who is investigating in her master's thesis how the displays of a drone control system can be designed to provide the best possible support for the operators.
