On Tuesday, 14 January, from 3.30 to 5 p.m., interested parties are invited to a lecture by writer Marko Martin followed by a discussion in the lecture theatre building at Chemnitz University of Technology, Reichenhainer Straße 90. The topic is the importance of intellectuals and what they say in times of crisis.

In his book "Do we need heretics? Stimmen gegen die Macht" (Voices against power) from 2023, author Marko Martin looks at anti-totalitarian thinkers and intellectuals who had an extraordinary sense of the danger of dictatorships and the fragility of liberal societies. In the lecture, he reports on his research.
The author mixes historical and contemporary perspectives. Those portrayed include Hilde Spiel and Jeanne Herrsch, Primo Levi, Fritz Beer and Hermann Broch. They were all secular Jewish writers who - often at great personal risk - described their time and still have a lot to say today. Marko Martin draws on dissident thinking and formulates an invitation to broaden contemporary debates through reading.
Born in 1970 in Burgstädt, Saxony, Marko Martin left the GDR in May 1989 as a conscientious objector. The journalist lives in Berlin. The locations of his stories and literary diaries published since then include Havana, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg and Hong Kong. He writes for the "WELT", the "Jüdische Allgemeine" and the bimonthly periodical "Internationale Politik", among others.
The event is a cooperation between the Chair of Political Theory and History of Ideas at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
