Museum of Natural History: Apple variety show with variety identification on 26 and 27 October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the TIETZ
On Saturday and Sunday, 26 and 27 October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., interested parties are invited to an apple variety show with variety identification at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. The #Sachsens_ObstKULTUR_entdecken campaign is organised by the Pomologen-Verein e. V. Landesgruppe Sachsen.
Admission to the exhibition and the family programme is free of charge for children and young people up to the age of 18. Adults pay 4 euros for admission to the exhibition. Variety identification is only possible with a valid adult ticket.
The apple exhibition provides an insight into the variety of shapes, smells and flavours of Saxon fruit varieties. In addition to the Yellow Saxon Renette, Saffron Apple, Maibier's Parmaäne, Saxon King Apple, Oberlausitzer Muskatrenette and the pear variety Minister Doktor Lucius, the Saxon Fruit Variety of the Year 2024, the Lusatian Carnation Apple, is also on display(Pomologen-Verein_Obstsorte des Jahres). Visitors' particularly rare fruit treasures can be integrated directly into the exhibition. The organisers are eager to see which varieties were able to withstand the late frosts and worm damage this year.
On both days, from 10 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm, the two experienced Chemnitz pomologists Manfred Schrambke and Kai Geringswald will be offering apple variety identification using fruit on the first floor of the Museum of Natural History. If possible, three to five typical, well-coloured and undamaged fruits should be available. The stem, core and seed must be intact. Historical fruit varieties can also be identified in this way.
The colours and shapes of the fruits are as varied as their taste and use. It is not uncommon for the regional varieties to be endangered. These old fruit varieties are just as much a cultural asset as historical buildings, songs and customs. With the help of the event format, the diversity of the historically grown fruit culture in Chemnitz and the region is to be visualised until at least 2025.
The "Apple Kids Club" offers family programmes for nature explorers with a thirst for knowledge. The programmes are accompanied by representatives of the Saxony regional group of the Pomologen-Verein e. V. (Pomologists' Association).
The #Sachsens_ObstKULTUR_entdecken campaign has now become a tradition at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz. The pomologists Manfred Schrambke and Kai Geringswald and the Museum of Natural History as organisers agree: "This format appeals to fruit lovers in the city and the region. The event also provides an insight into the complex tools required to identify fruit varieties."
