Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz: Variety show with variety identification on 28 and 29 October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the TIETZ
On Saturday and Sunday, 28 and 29 October, from 10 am to 5 pm, interested parties are invited to a variety show with variety identification under the motto "Discover Saxony's fruit culture" at the Museum of Natural History, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. The event is organised by the Pomologen-Verein e. V. Landesgruppe Sachsen.
Admission (including the exhibition and family programme) costs 4 euros. Children and young people up to the age of 18 do not pay admission. Variety identification is only possible with a valid adult ticket.
The following programme items are offered on both days:
From 10 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm - variety identification with the two experienced pomologists from the region, Manfred Schrambke and Kai Gehringswald, in the Museum of Natural History on the 1st floor of the TIETZ,
Here, interested parties can have historical fruit varieties identified. To identify an apple variety on the basis of the fruit, three to five typical, well-coloured and undamaged fruits should be available. The stem, core and seed must be intact.
From 3.30 to 4.30 p.m. - family programme "Which apple am I?" The pomologists will give children an insight into fruit variety identification.
The Apple Kids Club offers family activities for nature explorers with a thirst for knowledge. The activities will be supervised by Catrin Just, deputy spokesperson for the Saxony regional group of the Pomologen-Verein e. V., and Antje Scorl, member of the Saxony regional group of the Pomologen-Verein e. V.
In the apple exhibition , fruit lovers can discover the diversity of Saxony's fruit culture and stroll along the philosophical path of apple poetry. Visitors' particularly rare fruit treasures can be integrated directly into the exhibition.
For the first "Discover Saxony's Fruit Culture" campaign in 2022, 205 apple varieties were counted in the exhibition.
The extensive show with at least 150 apple varieties provides an insight into the variety of shapes, smells and flavours of Saxony's fruit varieties. In addition to the Yellow Saxon Renette, Saffron Apple, Maibier's Parmaäne, Saxon King Apple, Oberlausitzer Muskatrenette and the pear variety Minister Doktor Lucius, the Saxon Fruit Variety of the Year 2023, the Green Hoyerswerder, will also be on display. The pear variety, which originated in Saxony, was discovered as a seedling in a tree nursery in Hoyerswerda around 1790. The variety spread quickly and was first described in 1797 by pastor and pomologist Johann Ludwig Christ from Kronberg (Taunus) under the name 'Die grüne Sommerzukkerbirne von Hoyerswerda'.
The taste and use of the fruits are as varied as their colours and shapes. It is not uncommon for the regional varieties to be endangered. These old fruit varieties are just as much a cultural asset as historical buildings, songs and customs.
With the help of the event format, the diversity of the historically grown fruit culture in Chemnitz and the region is to be depicted until 2025 and beyond.
