Digital stele inaugurated on the market square
Stele provides information about the history of the market square and town hall from today
Mayor Barbara Ludwig today put the first digital information stele on the market square into operation. "The anniversary year '875 years of Chemnitz' is a good occasion to inaugurate these information steles and draw attention to the exciting history of the city. Our city has often changed and had to change for various reasons. This can now be easily understood with this information programme. And we don't just want to impart knowledge, we want the digital offerings to be fun and enjoyable," says the Lord Mayor.
City history for everyone
The digital stele can be operated via a 46-inch touchscreen display. It contains historical texts about the development of the market square and the town hall. Two photo galleries with around 50 images show the development. Audio files and videos can also be selected. The font of the texts can be enlarged or they can be read aloud. English translations and soundtracks are also available.
There are also plenty of additional functions included: Events organised by the city of Chemnitz are displayed. Children can use a children's button that reproduces content from the children's town hall guide. Bridal couples and couples in love can call up an animated heart picture "in love, engaged, married - in Chemnitz" via a heart function and then have themselves filmed or photographed together with this animation.
The information stele has been designed as a special format in the shape of an exclamation mark. The modern design has artistic elements and blends discreetly into the cityscape. Great importance was also attached to accessibility and protection against vandalism.
The background
In December 2016, Chemnitz city council approved a concept for the installation of modern information steles in the city centre. This was followed by a nationwide tender. The contract was awarded to the Chemnitz-based advertising agency WVD Dialog Marketing GmbH, which implemented this interactive project together with the Radebeul-based company Kriesten objekt design GmbH.
Three other locations are currently being considered for the installation of further information steles this year. The costs for five steles will amount to around 100,000 euros in 2018. This measure is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the members of the Saxon state parliament via the participation funding programme of the state of Saxony.
