Dialogue at the "Holy Sepulchre"
Event on the occasion of the 875th anniversary of the city - on 18 February, 10 a.m. in the Schloßbergmuseum
On Sunday, 18 February at 10 a.m., Uwe Fiedler and Dr Stefan Thiele will hold a dialogue at the "Holy Sepulchre" in the Schloßbergmuseum, Schloßstraße 12. Admission is free.
Due to limited seating capacity, tickets can be reserved immediately at the Schloßbergmuseum during opening hours, Tuesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm.
Chemnitz possesses an extraordinary monument to medieval art and piety in the form of the "Holy Sepulchre" from St Jakobi's Church. Due to its rarity and good state of preservation, the magnificent shrine with its rich tracery and figure decoration, which was created around 1500, has a special place in art history. It was originally intended as a "backdrop" for the Good Friday and Easter liturgy. The biblical tradition was to be conveyed to the people as realistically as possible with "acting images" and additional scenes. After the Reformation, it lost this function, remained unnoticed for a long time and finally ended up in museum storage in the 19th century. The "Holy Sepulchre" from Chemnitz reveals very different expressions of medieval concepts of life and faith: The use of images and liturgy, art and artists in a sacred environment, costume and weaponry as well as confessionalisation and monument preservation are just some of the aspects that come into play. In addition to an overview of international research trends and results, they will be presented in an entertaining "dialogue" on the object.
Chemnitz is celebrating its 875th anniversary this year. A joint project by the Chemnitz History Society, the Chemnitz Saxon Industrial Museum, the Schloßberg Museum, the Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology and the Chemnitz City Archive entitled "875 years of history in twelve months" will honour the city's history.
