Development concept adopted for the city archive until 2024
At its meeting today, the City Council approved the development concept 2018 to 2024 for the Chemnitz City Archive.
The development concept includes the development and implementation of long-term electronic archiving. The aim is to permanently archive electronic information and make it available. As the acquisition and realisation of an electronic long-term archive cannot be financed by a single municipality, the Saxon municipalities will set up a joint municipal archive. The sovereignty and ownership rights of the documents of the City of Chemnitz will remain with it.
On the other hand, the city archive contributes to making citizens aware of the city's distinctive and historically evolved profile, to sharpening it and to communicating it in a sustainable way through archive education and historical education work. The city archive also has a diverse and extensive audiovisual collection. The so-called "image archive" includes images, video and sound recordings. It requires permanent and constant professional support.
The city archive requires additional staff both for the establishment of an electronic long-term archive and for the implementation of archive education. One position is to be created for each in 2021.
Additional measures described in the development concept are the implementation of an emergency network to protect against disasters with other cultural institutions and archives in the city, the upgrading of the user area and reading room, the establishment of a circle of friends or support association for the city archive, as well as the analysis of accommodation requirements and the implementation of these results by 2024.
In order to be able to implement all measures, various staff increases are necessary. In addition, the internal organisation of the city archive will be adapted in order to fulfil the mandatory tasks outlined in the Saxon Archive Act and archive statutes.
