Design of the street space by citizens begins
NUMIC - New urban mobility awareness in Chemnitz
The online participation for sustainable mobility of the NUMIC research project starts immediately on numic.city. The aim is to develop an exemplary model route for walking and cycling together with the people of Chemnitz. Citizens can currently vote on the location of the model route.
With NUMIC, the city of Chemnitz is taking an innovative approach to a liveable city: the model route will be used to jointly design, experience and discuss the future street space.
NUMIC stands for New Urban Mobility Consciousness in Chemnitz. The focus is on environmentally friendly forms of mobility such as walking and cycling as well as the recreational aspect of the route.
After six months of urban planning, traffic planning and economic analyses, the project has developed three route proposals. From these three feasible route proposals, the model route will be determined by citizens by 30 June 2020. The proposals run from Brühl or the TU Campus towards the city centre or between Zeisigwald and Bernsdorf.
This model route will be developed over the coming months until spring 2021. Citizens will also be intensively involved in this phase, e.g. through an ideas competition for the design of the street space. The route will then remain in place for a total of twelve months for people to experience and test.
On the central participation platform numic.city, the people of Chemnitz are invited to help determine the location and design of the model route. At the same time, the portal provides information and opportunities for discussion on sustainable mobility. It also offers the option of taking part in exciting projects, such as a photo campaign on mobility culture.
An interdisciplinary team from research and administration is behind the NUMIC joint project. The City of Chemnitz, TU Chemnitz, TU Dresden, Fraunhofer IAO and Innosabi GmbH are all involved. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
