Delegation from the twin city of Akron from 19 to 22 May in Chemnitz

Invitation for media representatives to the festive award ceremony for the participants in the art competition to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust - Date: Thursday, 22 May, 5 pm, Jewish Community Centre Chemnitz

A delegation from Akron, Chemnitz's US twin city, will be visiting Chemnitz from 19 to 22 May. They will be joined by Billy Soule, Akron's Mayor's Representative for Community Relations, Michael Derr, Head of Marketing at the Akron-Summit County Library and Chairman of the Holocaust Art Competition Committee, and Stephen Kidder, Advisor to the Mayor of Akron, who has been closely associated with Chemnitz for many years. The guests' four-day Chemnitz programme includes a working meeting with Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig at City Hall on Wednesday morning (21 May).

On Monday (19 May), the stay of the guests from the twin city of Akron (state of Ohio) will begin with an extensive city tour of Chemnitz and a tour of the town hall with the Chemnitz tower. On Tuesday (20 May), a visit to the city library is on the agenda for the morning: here, the guests from Akron would like to find out about the america@yourlibrary programme, which is run in cooperation with the US Consulate General in Leipzig, and discuss the possibilities for cooperation between the two libraries of Chemnitz and Akron - Summit Landkreis. The visit will conclude with a tour of the TIETZ building before the Americans are expected to meet and talk with students and teachers at Agricola-Gymnasium Chemnitz on Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm.

The main focus of the visit to Chemnitz by the guests from Akron will be a festive event on Thursday, 22 May at 5 p.m. in the Jüdisches Gymnasium. Here, the Chemnitz pupils who took part in the partner city Akron's art and writing competition in memory of the victims of the Holocaust will be presented with their certificates of participation - representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend. Last autumn, the City of Chemnitz was invited to take part in this competition after a group of Chemnitz youths from the Jewish community of Chemnitz were approached during a visit to the twin city of Akron and brought the initiative back to Chemnitz (PM 777 from 10.12.2013 - www.chemnitz.de).
