Decision in principle to upgrade the theatre on Zieschestraße

The theatre is to be upgraded at its current location. The city of Chemnitz will propose this to the city council for a decision in October. The aim is to ensure that the theatre remains operational. It is also a necessary interim step on the way to the planned theatre quarter. Decisions in favour of or against the construction of a new theatre venue are not being made.

A preliminary examination of the existing building fabric was commissioned in 2016. This involved recording and assessing structural damage, analysing and compiling legal requirements and other defects as part of ongoing (expert) inspections, including fire protection.

As a result, around €5 million will be required for planning and construction between 2019 and 2023. These financial resources can be used to implement the external and internal building construction, structural fire protection measures and the renewal of the building's technical systems (relocation of separate drinking and extinguishing water supplies, ventilation technology, etc.) in accordance with the current state of the art requirements.

The aforementioned measures are necessary for the proper continuation of gaming operations at the Zieschestraße location with the option of a further utilisation period of 15 years.

Furthermore, a decision as to whether the refurbishment work is compatible with ongoing match operations or whether a replacement venue and thus a temporary relocation of match operations would be necessary can only be made once a corresponding planning status has been reached.
