Decision in principle on new gymnasium
Yesterday, the city council passed a resolution in principle to build a new gymnasium in the Chemnitz Sports Forum. However, the prerequisite for the construction is that the city's budget situation actually permits this and that the state and federal government contribute a total of 80 per cent of the funding.
The aim is to expand and consolidate the national centre and to further develop gymnasts with top international performances for the national team at the traditional location of Chemnitz. Under the current conditions, however, systematic training for all age groups of children and young people as well as the master class is not possible in the required quality: the large gymnasium is used by more than 80 athletes for training sessions on weekdays (several times a day). The training area of approx. 1,000 m² is far too small.
The present design study for the planned gymnasium envisages the development of an area of approx. 4,300 m² (not including the outdoor area, etc.). The usable sports area amounts to approx. 2,500 m² and fulfils all requirements for high-quality training in all age groups. The installation of several jumping pits ensures the highest possible level of safety on all equipment. The plans are based on the experience and requirements of the coaches and the gymnastics club as well as other national centres for optimal training and comprehensive support for all athletes.
According to current planning, the new gymnastics hall will cost around 12.5 million euros to plan and realise. If the entire project is funded by the Free State of Saxony and the federal government, the city assumes a total funding rate of 80 per cent due to its importance for competitive sport. The city would therefore have to bear 20 per cent of the costs itself. Planning and funding applications are planned for 2013 and 2014.
